Guys I am looking for a home nightstand wheather radio for the bedroom. I am wanting one that has an alarm that goes of when something is bad. I am getting a lot of big storms in my parts and the last thing I need is one sneaking up on me while sleeping. What should I be looking for and where can I get it?

what you want is one that supports SAME

here is NOAA page on it

http://www.nws.noaa.gov/nwr/nwrsame.htm

there are many out there, I'm sure someone will come along and recommend one shortly

I've got this one made by Midland - it is easy to use and easy to program and has a battery back-up.  I've got some of the portable hand-crank ones if needed but that Midland is a nice unit - 30 bucks at Wal-Mart

eta: is supports SAME for up to 25 counties

I have a radio shack Pro-164 scanner. It supports NOAA, SAME, and has a hotkey to go to the local Skywarn freq.

Get one with a S.A.M.E alert and external antenna input (use a outdoor vhf antenna for better reception), I have a radio shack model which beeps like hell whenever there is an alert, also uses a 9v battery for when the power goes out.

I live in Florida so this thing goes off at least a couple times a month, when it was new, it went off in the middle of the night and I jumped, turns out there is two volume control(s) one on the alert and another for the weather, It comes set from the factory at the loudest setting ; this alert is loud (Keep it across the room and not on the night stand otherwise your likely to go def), I would say nearly as loud as a smoke detector, it will wake up everyone in the house.

Every home should have one, just like a smoke/carbon detector, fire extinguisher.

Good Luck.

MIne went off three times this weekend.  It's a little annoying, but better of annoyed than dead.

I got mine at a yard sale in a grab bag for 2 bucks.  It also had a sony AM/FM/TV radio in the same bag along with a deck of cards and about half dozen 8 Track tapes.

Midland, works great for $2.00.

I also have a Midland hand held for hiking and camping.  It also worls well, once you figure out the darn directions.

or you could get your Amateur Tech license and a Yaesu VX-170 for around $125.

you'd have better comms for SHTH as well.
