Should I get one? I've got a bandanna in my BOB and I was wondering if replacing it with a shemagh would be a better idea since it covers more.  At the same time I don't want to be another "trendy-hipster" because I bought one.  Thoughts? Do you own one?

I think they are awesome. I have two in my gear I recommend getting one- Not only does it cover more on you than a bandanna, it has more uses. head cover, scarf, impromptu blanket, improvised sun shade, pressure dressing, sling, etc....

I see your point. I suppose as long as I don't wear it around town to show how cool I am I'll be ok. It has valid uses as you pointed out. Thanks I think I'm going to order one, where did you get yours by the way?

You can get them through Cheaper Than Dirt (about the only cheap thing on there these days) or through BQM.  The Brigade Quartermaster ones are pretty well made and can stand up to a beating in my experience.  The only drawback is they are a little more bulky than bandanas, but other than that, far more useful.

LAPOLICEGEAR.com  has them for real cheap $7 a pop. I ordered 3 not too long ago.

Good for hot weather only.

Really, I'd rather have a wide-brimmed hat...

sabre will jump on me for this (he already has) but I keep 2 in my gear. 1 works as a  camp towel, the other I wear.

they are good during the summer, but during the winter I wear an Under Armor Coldgear Balaclava under it. if you can learn how, there is about 15-20 different ways to wear it. everything from head dresses to a sling for a broken arm. they are very hand to have.

only when its cold as in under 30f outside. at night or early AM, used  it when hunting once or twice  and a few range days when it was nasty cold and windy.

not when its hot.

wide brimmed hat and bandana work fine IMHO.

plus they are bulky and heavy to put in a pack

Aaaallllriiigghttyy, and now I have to get pedantic and jump all over my good buddy KrazyL!

My beef with a shemagh as a piece of clothing is this: It's cotton. This means I want it nowhere near me when it's cold (Under 70 degrees)... at that point, give me a synthetic balaclava that will wick, dry, and warm better than anything made of cotton ever will.

If you want a camp towel, get a camp towel that will pack smaller, lighter, and dry faster than a cotton shemagh.

Above 80, AKA, hot weather, I can totally see the purpose in extremely dry, arid environments - retain moisture and protect from evaporation. If I was in a desert, or at high altitude, I'd be begging for one.

In my AO, summers mean weather so damp I can just about swim as easily as I can walk. I need nothing to help me retain moisture on the skin, so a wide-brimmed hat is just what the Dr. ordered to keep the sun off me.

They work fine for here in TX, but I agree with Protus that they are a little too bulky.  I like the more modern "pack towels" as a towel, but  I do pack a bouple of issue cravats/OD bandanas...they dry pretty quick for how thin they are and they work as a decent cooling neck wrap, head cover and simple washcloth.

I've got that same UA Balaclava. I love it. Kept me warm in 0 degree weather with wind waiting to get into a gun show. How heavy are they? And I agree a shammy would probably be better for a towel.

I have used them in hot and cold and it worked great in both conditions. My ears/head did not get cold, it kept the wind off, in the summer, it kept the sun off my head and face. I also use a beany or wide rim hat too. just depends how I am feeling that day.

Summer = boonie hat

Winter = wool scarf

What was this thread about?

(I'd feel too self conscious to wear one.  Too hadji-esqe for my taste.)
