| I am looking for a handheld GPS unit for hiking and boating. I have a unit for my vehicle already. I am going on vacation with the family boating and want something with lake maps so we don't get lost while out exploring. I was thinking Garmin 60 csx or 76 csx.. But open to all suggestions as I have never owned or used a handheld unit before. Thanks in advance for any help. |

With the additional street and topo maps, it's a very valuable tool. I use mine on my dual sport motorcycle (on and off road) and for general outdoor use. |

Thanks in advance for any help. my garmin is the portable aviation version. it has the sectional maps and navaids and other flying related data in it. i also bought a computer loaded map system for highways and topo's for it. i am very pleased with it. i enjoy the moving map in a vehicle. i find myself switching back and forth between modes, just out of curiosity. on foot, i prefer a compass and topo, as trees/foliage blocks the gps signals and i don't think you move fast enough for the moving map (this could be just be related to the aviation version) to cycle. when my wife and i go geocaching she uses the gps, i usually find the cache faster with the compass and topo. while she is fussing with getting a signal in the woods. |

| The Garmin Vista HcX is also a very good unit. It is slightly smaller than the 60 series. Mine does very well, and will get 36 or more hours constant on with NiMH batteries. |

I've used my 60CSx on the trail, on the water, in my truck, on my bike, and on the quad. Very nice GPSr, highly recommend it... 45JHP |

Thanks guys. I found a great package deal on Amazon for the Garmin 60 CSX and the Topo map software. Thanks againn for all your help. Great! Just remember that the topo maps DO NOT do routing. Don't know if routing (i.e. the unti telling you when and where to turn) is important to you, but if so you'll need to get City Navigator street maps. About $100. |

+1 60csx,
i sugest you buy the largest memory card avaialble that works in the unit, all the maps and data takes a lot of memory space. between topo and city navigator i originaly could only add part of my state with the stock card, i add a larger card ( i think 4meg) and now can load most of the northeast. |

Thanks guys. I found a great package deal on Amazon for the Garmin 60 CSX and the Topo map software. Thanks againn for all your help. The mapping software is nice, but not completely accurate. Minor roads on there may or may not exist, or exist 2km from where they are shown, etc. As long as you do not rely on it too much for minutia, you will be fine. |
