I want to purchase a LED headlamp for my BOB and I'm curious which ones are fairly good quality and has capability for different brightness settings.

I was looking at the Black Diamond ICON lamp, but don't know if it is a good one.

All your thoughts?

like a lot of things, there are very pricey items that work very well, and there are less pricey items that work almost as well.

its like the difference between a $50 knife and a $400 knife. the utility for the vast majority of people is often the same.

I like the Princtontec EOS. I use it for racing mountian bikes on single track at night. I HAVE to be able to see pretty far in front of me, clearly, while still having a little spill to the sides. It is also waterproof and pretty rugged. I have swam with it and I have dropped it onto hard surfaces.

It has three brightness settings and a strobe setting.

Good gear for less than $50.

I just picked up one of the Coleman Cree headlamps from Walmart. It's rated at 105 lumens with a 6 hour runtime. It isn't waterproof, but it seems to be very bright. I compared it with my Olight T15 and it isn't as bright, and has a slightly yellow tint to the beam, but the side spill is better - which will be more useful to me when working outside at night. Not shabby for $27.

Is the Coleman a LED light?

I have a couple of Tikka headlamps and like them a lot. Had one in the gulf for a year and it took lots of abuse without ever dying on me.

I've got the Petzl Tikka XP headlamp. It's got best ratings from Backpacker Magazine and so on. Absolutely love it. Wouldn't buy another one. I even think that they make a Tactical model too.

I use the Petzl MYO XP at work attached to my hardhat and I beat the crap out of it.
Over a year old and works great. Bright and runs a long time on 3 AA batteries

I have an innova 24/7.  It has a couple of different modes but I only use the red, and 2 white LED ones.  My favorite part is that it takes 123 batteries.

the LED brightness was mediocre and the Xenon bulb was very yellow and a battery killer.

Bummer........

you would think the Streamlight would be better than that, and it will cost too much to ship back at the 24 bucks I paid for it. Wonder what would happen if I changed out the Xenon bulb......

As an alternative to spending big bucks on a dedicated headlamp, you might consider getting a flashlight headband adapter that can be used with your current collection of flashlights instead.

Fenix makes a nice one that will work with most "tactical" flashlights.

I carry an Energizer brand head lamp.  It has a One Watt LED, and can switch to two smaller red ones, or two white ones.
Comfortable, stays in place, cost about $20 at Wally World.

My son carries a TurboCat bike helment lamp.  10 watts and golly it sure lights up the road.  Spendy though.
