I'm wiring one from the kitchen to the new addition basement. There's only one staircase to the basement and Mrs Trout doesn't want to be yelling to get my attention. I'm using one of these from Dynalec:

Sound Powered Station

The huge benefit of sound-powered is that they require no power to work and you can add up to 144 stations with almost any combination of handsets, headsets, call stations and amplifiers. They work at long distances (over 1000ft) and you can find them from gov't surplus pretty cheap. Anyone who's been in Uncle Sam's canoe club knows sound powered phones all too well.

Mine were procured from DRMO before I left active duty. Sound Powered Phones are used in mines, prisons and factories.

A couple sources are :

Sound Powered Corp

Dynalec

KEI

You can also check with commercial shipyards or salvage yards.

Where do you find these?  I've tried finding field phones at surplus stores.  You can imagine how that went.

I have some TA-1042s. I mostly keep them around because they are neat, but they do work.
