Time to start upgrading the GHB...    have not kept a hand gun in the GHB previously, but now want to dedicate one to the vehicle and leave it there...

So..   what is the most dependable and cheap handgun in either 9mm or .45ACP for dependability considering lack of use...   will just sit in the car.... in the heat...

This will likely take some abuse and wear from being tossed around in a GHB.. so low cost will be an issue....

Suggestions please!!??

no, no...no... that is way too obvious...    there has to be more options out there!!!

I currently carry a G-17...   was considering buying a G-26 for concealed carry... and using the G17 for the GHB...     but...  surely, there are other good options out there!!!!

really....

if you had to buy a dependable gun, to take all kinds of lack of care abuse, and didn't want to spend a dollar more than you had to...   what???

Why would you leave a gun in a car? Thats not a very safe place for it. Just get a CCW and carry your piece around with you.

[#9]
I'm not a big van of leaving it in the car (unless it's VERY well hiddend and or multi locked)

I say stick with what you know. It's nice to have the same gun since it uses the same mags and spare parts etc and you are more familiar with it.

Thats why my bed gun is a G21 and my carry is a G30 and I'm considering a G30 for the houseboss and picking up another G21 just for general purpose and wild movie dreams of two fisting them against the bad guys (not really lol)

I've been a big Sig-Sauer fan for as long as I've been shooting.  However, my fiance recently expressed a desire to have her own house gun and I also wanted another cheaper pistol for a BOB/GHB.  My dealer had NIB G19's with 3 magazines and factory installed Trijicons for $550.  I just bought one, I wish had I bought two while he still had them.  My fiance really likes the G19, it's a much better fit for her than any of my Sigs, it's also easier for her to rack the slide.  The trigger also sucks much less than I expected.

While I still love my P226's and P228, there is a place for a Glock 19 in anyone's collection.  My next purchase is a Glock 20 SF in mid-January 2009.

Why would you give up the mag interchangeability (the 26 can take your 17's mags), on a platform you're already familiar with and carry, and is already reliable and affordable?

You've already found your answer, I think you're just bored and want justification for a new toy. Ain't nothin' wrong with that right there

Go with your gut feeling.

A full frame semiauto in a GHB bag that's going to be neglected and an application where weight plus concealability is a major factor is kind of silly.

Get the G26 and kill two birds with the same stone.

I picked up a EAA Witness for $230.00 used and got 4 extra 10rd mags at $10.00 ea. This is in the bottom of the BOB/GHB and that where it stays until needed. I also carry full time so the Witness is the backup to my 2 carry guns. All pistols are in .45 so ammos the same. I also in the past picked up a LLama .45. They have a bad rep and alot of people will say its a hit or miss pistol. This one works great and feeds 230 grain ball all day long. The Llama only cost $220.00. This also would be a pistol at the bottom of a BOB or a truck hide out peice in a lock box. I know both of these pistols are reliable and shoot them along with the rest of my weapons. If somthing happened to either one i'm not out alot of $$$. I don't mind buying used weapons for below market and using them as hide outs. They might be the only weapon I could get to in a hurry. Ya just dont know because no one has a crystal ball to see the future. Its like finding that $125.00 pump 12Ga. in the corrner of your favorate gun store. You know its a good name shotgun so ya buy it and put it in your arms room along with your other 6+ pump shotguns for that rainny day in the future. What ever pistol you decide on make sure you train with it and its comfortable for you as well as being in your price range.

LOL, Nah, I just get way off on uber-tactical talk on the internet.  It always makes me smile.

I am neither a Glock worshiper nor a Glock thrasher.  I have two myself and my G26, I probably carry more than any handgun I own.  I find them one very reliable weapon and I do like the idea I can use G17 mags in my little G26.

On the other hand, I also own two XDs and find them very reliable.  Better, the XD .45 fits my small hand and its far less transition from a straight hand grip handgun to an XD over a Glock.  I currently have a XD 9 that has lived in my truck now for over a year without a blemish.  I can't speak more highly of the XD .45.

Is the XD the ultimate handgun?  Nope.   Its a Tupperware gun like the Glock.  Still both gun makes for the money are an exceptional value as is the Smith and Wesson M&P.

Personally in a GHB as outlined with zero maintenance, I'd much prefer a .38 snubbie in stainless.  Besides good for self defense, the odds of meeting a nasty snake with an attitude or shoot small game for food is slightly higher than self defense and the ability to feed bird shot a real plus in a survival handgun if its your only weapon.

The entire idea of a GHB is to get home or get out to get some help if your vehicle breaks down.  Going to war, we'd all do things much differently.

I am a recent add to the Glock Fan Club, I only have one in 9mm the caliber Gaston Glock Intended it to be in. I have had 1911s, Shot the hell out of XDs in several calibers, Beretta (carried as a sidearm for FAR too long) SIG, I landed on a G17 as my GOTO gun and never looked back.

I'm a "I love glocks but can't shoot them worth a dang because of the weird grip angle" club member....

I have a m92FS, I can shoot it well, I can even hit a silhouette steel plate at about 85 yards with it. handguns aren't my strong point.... but I'm working on it....

anyway I've used all of the Hk line, most of the glock line out there, more 1911's than you can shake a stick at... XD's, and M&P's... i've used just about everything...

The best handgun is going to be the one you can use most effectively... it doesn't matter how cool it is if you can't hit crap with it... for me, I can't use glocks. but give me a Beretta or Hk and I assure you I can hold my own.

I was going to say that. I have a P85 that I've had for almost 15 years that is a great gun. Reliable as hell and as you said built like a tank. It also weighs about as much as a tank too. I have a G19 I keep as my main sidearm but I sometimes keep the Ruger in the truck because I'm not as worried about losing it if someone breaks into my truck.
