I have a LE Type4 Mark 1 Longbranch and a Mosin Nagant. They both are in good condition and both shoot about the same. However, I can afford to buy a good supply of ammo for only one of them. Given the above, which would be the better one inwhich to invest the money for 1000 rds of ammo? I'm leaning toward the LE because of the detachable magazines.

Which do you feel is more reliable, go that route. Which do you feel you can maintain and repair without the help of society.
Sorry to be crass, but if you need to ask this question of complete strangers on the internet, you need to do more research.

If they both work and are reliable, why not just split it and get some for both? Eggs in one basket, and all that.

well the MN has been proven to fire no matter what and out last 100 users
ammo is cheaper than 303 and  well you could get another MN and the same amount of ammo as the cost of the 303 ammo..youd then have a back up to your back up

7.62x54R is cheaper than .303, but the Lee-Enfield is a much better battle rifle.  In your place I might buy a spam can of 7.62x54R  since it's cheap, and then start stockpiling .303.  The action is a lot smoother and faster to work.  Try doing this with a Mosin:

No.4 mag dump

(I like Mosins, heck, I own five.  The L-E is a better rifle though.)

Lee Enfield––simply because the magazine spring/lifter assembly in a MN is so Rube Goldbergesque as to amaze me...and if any of those little pieces breaks...you're limited to a single shot rifle.  Trust me, I've seen it happen.

Sell them both and buy a nice Yugo M48 Mauser.

It's one I already have. Wouldn't want to buy another 5 rounder.

IMHO the sighting system of the enfield is superior and makes up for the difference in ammo cost. If you practice with peeps on your ebr it makes sence to me to focus on the enfield because it has peeps. Other than that I don't think it makes a lot of difference.

Lee Enfield. I have one in excellent condition. Built like a tank, accurate, totaly reliable.

I wouldn't sell it.

I chose the mosin nagant.

Mine is one of the ones rebuilt by the finish.

I decided on it somewhat because of the bullet size and me having some ak stuff around for reloading.  I believe they have the same diameter bullet.

Then again I thought it was a cool history to the rifle as well to have been rebuilt and used again.

If the bores are the same why not invest in reloading equipment instead?

Same bullets
Same primers
Same powders

You just need different dies and a supply of boxer primed brass for each.

Note MN bores may vary, mine shoots better with .308 cal bullets.

There is no comparison regarding the rifles themselves, the Lee Enfield is much superior.

If you seriously had to stake your life on one, you'd want it to be the Enfield.

Downside is the price of ammo.

If you could lay in a supply of .303 British ammo, stripper clips and cleaning gear, that would be the way to go.

If not, make due with the Mosin. Ammo is still relatively inexpensive, but don't expect it to last.

I have (had) one of each.  I sold the Enfield some years ago - mistake.

In the event you are using the rifle is a defensive situation, you are probably not going to be doing a mag dump from an exposed position.  It'll be shoot and scoot most likely.
The 10 round capacity is great - the stripper clips are hard to find but they work fine.

Only problem is the ammo cost.  But its out there - keep your eyes open adn you can find surplus around sometimes.  Otherwise, start with 100 rounds and buy a box or two as you can.
The MN is okay - if you can get stripper clips that work, cool.  But they are hit and miss.  You can still pick up a spam can or 400 rnds or so under 100 dollars I think.  Get one and store it away.
But I think the Enfield is a much better rifle.  The Mauser is second to me on ly in the magazine capacity.  For around $150 you can still pick up a decent surplus mauser and the ammo is relatively cheap right now.   With stripper clips the 5 rouinds is not as much of a problem for a lone rifelman.

I'd throw my lot with the No.4 for many of the above reasons- notably the better sights, capacity, and ease of operation.

I find the mosin the slowest and most awkward to operate of numerous military rifle actions. YMMV.

heck all you lads here have a great eye for weapons..the NO#4mk1 or 2 is a really a great low cost rifle...down side is finding quality surplus ammo in large amounts..i have about 500rds surplus F.M.J ready to go on oiled charger clips in bandolers....out of all the weapons i own i truly enjoy the smooth action of my Enfields....vince g. 11b inf

I know it wasn't an option but I would sell both and get something better, preferably a semi-auto.  I wouldn't want to have to rely on either on those two weapons in a shtf situation.  Better than nothing I guess.

Unless you have a stockpile of ammo set aside you'll find 303 British ammo is much more common in a sporting goods store than 7.62x54 for the Mosin.

I'd stick with the Enfield.

Already have those. This is a Backup!!!!

I would not have either of those.  Both are antique, and fire a non US military caliber, making resupply difficult.
My back up is a spare AR or M1A.
