I'm looking for a hiking/survival knife for hiking in the Adirondacks this spring/summer/fall and maybe winter. I think I am going to go with the Rat Cutlery 4. Is this a good choice?

I picked up the Rat Cutlery RC-3 a few months ago with the same purpose (and similar geography) in mind.  It's great - positive grip, stout blade, good finish, flexible carry options.  I chose the RC-3 over the RC-4 with the thought that I may EDC it, but essentially they are the same knife with a different length blade.  I think it's a good choice.

Two others to look at:  Gerber LMF II and it's little brother, the Prodigy.

You did well.  Few things are not able to be improved upon; the 1911, peanut butter and 1095 carbon steel with a good heat treat are just a few that come to mind.

I've got the O-RAT 5 and like it alot, but in the future I'm going to buy from RC to support the original.

I got the RC-4 in today and I'm impressed with what I see. I'm planning on taking it on a hike w/ me tomorrow and see how well it's made.
