the SA m6 .22/.410 survival rifle is also another possibility if a semi auto is not a necessity for you. the guy in the article below has a pretty well planned out bit of kit.

edited to finx this link. here's the link

that one looks pretty cool...

edit: I have looked into those b4... never could find any as affordable as the AR-7 so the AR-7 would be my first choice... I like the way the AR-7 folds right up into its own stock.. I plan on buying an AR-7 in the future for myself... I want to have another 22 cal rifle that I can use as a back up and easly throw in a BOB.  My ruger 10/22 would serve as primary and the AR-7 would be the back up... considering I can only really afford to  "stock pile" 22 ammo as its pretty cheap.  also cheap to shoot alot, which i like to do.
All that being said 22 isnt my first choice over all, but considering i stock about 5k rounds its good to have to weapons that can use the ammo... my first choice for SHTF situation is my 9mm hi point as 9mm ammo is still pretty cheap vs other cals. I want to try and keep stocked up on at least 1k round for my 9mm... i shoot alot though so I dont always have that much... I do always keep a few hundred rounds on hand...
I also have a 20G, 3030, and rem model 600 308... that ammo is expensive and I only keep my stock of those up to about 100 rounds.
in any SHTF situation comes about that I have to use that much ammo for anything I would be happy to still be alive and take which ever gun I have ammo left for and head for my cabin 30 miles in the middle of no-where and do my best to wait it out and hope for the best.  As long as I have 1k rounds of 22 ammo I think i could be ok for a while that far away...  however I would probably be living off sunfish

I'm going to suggest you buy anything but the AR7 which is quite unreliable and extremely inaccurate.

Look for something where the barrel/receiver is firmly fixed to preserve accuracy.  If you plan to use optics fit picatinny mounts so the scope goes on the receiver in the same place every time.  If you want to save money buy an old Winchester/Mossberg/Savage/Marlin .22 rifle and make something yourself, the cheap stainless/synthetic Marlin boltguns are great value.  Cut the barrel to 16.1" and maybe turn it down thin, shorten and lighten the stock to save weight, weld a big knob to the stock bolt so you can break the gun down for storage.  Fit a few spare magazines in the stock.

Just don't buy an AR7, it is a great concept poorly executed.

Supposed to be much more reliable and accurate than the AR7.

It seems like some people really like the marlin or ar-7...

I have never used a marlin so cant speak for it.. i am sure its a great gun and seems to be similar to a ruger 10/22 so I dont think ether would be a bad choice.  I think the AR-7 is more of a pack gun, good for alittle bit of range use, plinking but mostly for hiding in a cubby and using it in a survival situation...
I think the marlin might be a better choice if you plan on doing alot of shooting, or its going to be your primary 10/22...
I already have a ruger so for me the AR-7 will make a better back up/spare... like i said above i plan to use it when camping or out wheeling with my jeep.  I will also throw it in my pack when i do long back country hunting trips... nice to have something extra...

I'm also a Marlin Papoose fan, only I have the original wood/blue model. Mine is very reliable, and generally will eat whatver high velocity ammo I feed it. A relative has the stainless model, but he did need to do adjust the lips on the 10 round magazines for them to work (the 7's worked a-ok without modification). It is very accurate, and more importantly, shootable. The front sight on the older model Papoose is finer, and I prefer that.

I looked at AR-7's on several occasions, but I never liked one enough to buy it. They always seem too wobbily for me.

Another option is the Rossi Matched Pair. It's only a single shot, but it breaks into a compact package and gives you the option between a shotgun or a .22 rifle.

THe ulitimate stock.

I cant find a picture of it... My google fu is weak.  Someone made a collapsable stock for a ruger 1022 that the barrel was mounted on the forend and would fold the rifle up like a Keltec SUB2000. It looked really nice and was meant to take camping.

Kel-Tec is also coming out with their own folding .22LR semi-auto rifle as well.

Browning Semi Auto-22

designed by JMB himself

I don't know why more folks around here (AFRCOM) don't mention or consider it.

An elegant, nice handling, light, well made .22 rifle.

Scope mount to the barrel, so no zero problems with takedown/re-assembly

I have never used a Henry AR-7 but had one of the charter arms ones (I also had the explorer but sold both yes I am still kicking myself).  It was nice but for lots of shootign I prefered the marlin papoose.  Another option would be the youth combos with a 22lr and shotgun barrel in a padded case.
