What is a good messkit to take on a backpacking trip. It does not have to be a kit, but just what do you recommend for cooking while on the trail. The stove will be a whisperlite if that makes a difference. Thanks

I use a stainless steel Naglene cup mostly and an Ozark Trails stainless for eating or frying.

The MIL setup is just too heavy.

I'd love to have a Titanium setup but the cost is prohibitive.

I use a canteen cup (16oz+) and a pocket rocket.  A Jetboil is a good modular unit.

What are you cooking?

Scratch cooking, game or fish cooking, or boiling water?

All different IMO.

I use the MSR blacklight non-stick set, and take what I need depending on the trip.  I also have the MSR stainless steel kit (can't remember the name of it) that I won, but have never used it.  It's really nice, but kindof heavy.  It's in my wifes BOB

If I'm solo I use my Snow Peak Ti mug

When someone else is with me, I also bring my MSR Stowaway pot.

All I ever do is boil water. If I wanted to actually cook food, I'd use a medium sized non-stick fry pan or just cook it over a fire.

ETA: I like the Snow Peak mug because my Nalgene bottles fit inside it.

Fish are easy to cook. (Unsolicited cooking advice to follow)

Light a fire, let it burn down to coals. Clean the fish, season with salt, pepper, lemon, onion or whatever, wrap in heavy duty foil, place in fire, cover with coals. It will be ready in about 20 minutes and no clean up. I like trout, bass and catfish this way. I also like this method for potatoes and meatloaf. Although potatoes will take up to an hour to cook.

You just added some aluminum foil to my BOB, and GHB. I really like the concept of cooking in disposible containers as well as my titanium cup that I carry with my GHB. My BOB has a Jetboil and I love it.

I just wonder how the TSA will react to folded up aluminum in my luggage?

hey jmhat98 how you doing.... like the guys said above, heavy grade tin foil is the way to go for cooking your fish on hot coals...season to taste and butter down for good cooking...for boiling water ANY alum. or steel cooking item will do...me i like either the British type messtin or the German kit ,the German kit has a good size cooking pot to boil water or make soup or stew while the lid is your plate and you can store items it the cook pot while on the move....i also agree on the tablet stove idea..i use the German Esbit tablet stove with both of the above messtins...or you can use the tried and true stainless steel canteen cup, also a very smart option in your kit...vince g. 11b inf..

right now I'm using a Swiss surplus trangia mess kit...yes it's heavy....but it does work well.

at the bare minimum at least have a metal pot so you can cook over a fire, which you should be doing to save your stove fuel as much as possible so you can carry less of it and cut down your weight.  I cant tell you how much I carry because I haven't figured out how many ounces of fuel fit into these heavy duty aluminum containers my dad got me from the hospital...they hold anesthesia liquid that turns into a gas to knock you out IIRC.  Pretty volitale stuff too so I know they're G2G.  They're much lighter than those MSR fuel bottles but probably not as rugged.

Depends on what you've brought for food...

If it's just MRE/Mountain House stuff, then I'll use a set up like AFSOC shows.

For something more complete, I still have my old Mirro aluminum mess kit. By "old", I mean it was made in the USA. Damn collectors item, it is.

For a truck out camp trip, I have a stainless steel camp cooking kit with full utensils, plates, cups etc. I picked up the basic cooking kit from SG when they had a give-away sale once. I just added the extra items from places like Big Lots and Walmart.

GI cup and stove.

Foolproof...You can use multiple sources for fuel. I prefer 1.25 oz gel fuel packets.

I currently use a Brasslite alcohol stove with MSR Titan kettle and windscreen made of heavy aluminum foil.

Get something to hold the pot and whatever utensils you like and you'll be all set.

Titanium is expensive, and aluminum will work fine. Just ignore the stories that come out every once in a while about it being carcinogenic.

Brunton double boiler
haven't put it through its paces yet, but I've had a similar one from GSI (can't find a link but got it at llbean) for 2 years with a whisperlight and like it alot, works great. I like my new  Brunton model  as its a couple of ounces lighter and has graduates for measuring water to boil for prepared freezedried meals.

And I bought it at freakin' MidwayUSA!!!
