OK gents,

A really bad windstorm the other day knocked power out. I have a 15kW Generac LP-powered genset and we managed pretty good.

My concern is maintenance. I need to stock up on oil filters and air filters to do the maintenance on my machine. I've gathered the numbers from my genset, and I'm trying to find the service interval in runtime hours to know how often to change the oil. The machine ran for almost 24 hours solid this last time, except for when we shut it down to check the oil. It runs a weekly system check for about 20 minutes, and it's come on a fwe other times since I've moved in (8 months ago). My goal is to change the oil in the next week or two (I'm in a wheelchair temporarily and have to arrange help on these things), and to stock up maintenance supplies and get on a standard maintenance plan.

Can anybody help me find the service intervals for my machine? I'm also interested in finding local FRAM/standard automotive filters to use instead of the Generac brand filters, if possible. So, cross referenced part numbers would be great as well. There are no Generac service centers within 100 miles of my area.

Please, ARFCOM SF, help me out! I know you can do it!

Generac 15kW Aircooled, LP fueled genset with automatic transfer switch

Engine # OE6219 00175
Engine model GT990
Serial # 7705052
Oil Filter # 070185B (superceded by 070185D)
Air Filter # C8127

Again, if anyone can help with service interval information, technical information (oil capacity, other specs), cross referenced filter numbers, or a great online source for parts/service equip i would love the help!

Thanks!

Oil filter Wix 51394  available at napa or fleetfilter.com
Air filter no cross reference
I did see Home Depot has a maintenance kit for generac

You think you have it bad.
I just bought a Lombardini diesel generator made in Italy
After 2 days of searching I finally was able to cross reference after I received the OEM parts and got the numbers off the filter versus part numbers

I personally would pick up a couple of filters at napa and then order a case to have on hand from fleetfilter.com

Hope this helps

BTW  The generator the diesel replaced is a 8KW 16 hp briggs and the manual says to replace oil every 25 hours if under heavy load, every 50 hours otherwise and filter every 100 hours
I think the engine in yours is a relabeled Briggs

I have this same gen set...Generac 15kW Aircooled, LP fueled genset with automatic transfer switch

Installation and Owners Manual

Oil capacity is 1.7qts including filter
Spark plug is RC12YC gapped to 0.508mm or 0.020inch
Compression ratio 9.5:1
Generac oil filter 070185B, but Home Depot carries the 007185, and it is fine to use.
Generac air filter 0C8127
Valve clearance 0.002-0.004inch (0.05-0.1mm)

The only thing I can find in the manual about service interval schedule is:

Inspect fuel lines monthly
inspect oil level monthly
Change oil after break in and yearly, the book recommends 5w-30 synthetic after break-in
Change oil filter after break in and yearly
Inspect and clean louvers weekly
Inspect, clean, tighten battery and terminals monthly
Inspect charge, electrolyte levels, and replace battery if needed bi-annualy
Inspect and replace air cleaner yearly
Inspect and replace plugs yearly
Inspect general condition monthly

I can not find anything in the manual reference changing the oil after extended run time, but I have sent an email inquiry to get an answer.

I have not replaced items that are good and clean on mine like the air filter. I have cleaned and gapped the plugs once in 2.5 years. I also just put in a new battery, as the one that was in there developed a crack in the case (replaced under warranty, pro-rated off a 60 month term) for $41.00

Have not found any cross over #'s for the filters, though I have not looked hard, so I just order mine (Generac labeled) off the internet, and keep some spares in the garage.

The generator housing on mine has started to rust in more than a couple of places, so, repairing the rust will be the next small project.

Hope this helps.

You guys are really great. That's some excellent technical information and it will come in handy! The cross referenced NAPA numbers will be helpful too. It's my plan to buy maybe a case or so of oil filters, a handful of airfilters, and a couple of spark plugs, head gaskets, motor mounts, and other supplies. Just in case.

The housing on ours has started to rust a bit too, and we cleaned up quite a bit of battery corrosion when we checked the oil. Pretty spic and span now, but I'll need to remember to keep an eye on it. There's some kind of grounding wire between the floorboard of the housing and the removable front cover; the ring terminal on that wire had rusted through. Simple enough fix, though.

I'm kicking around the idea of an extra possibly wooden enclosure to help reduce sound volume, or rather redirect it skyward. The genset is almost right outside our bedroom window (the way the house is designed, there wasn't any other good place for it) so while it's tolerable, less is better.

You guys rule, I knew I could count on y'all.

I got a reply to my question on how often to check and/or change the oil during an extended run time.

They recommended checking the oil every 24 hrs, and to change it every 100 hours.

So taking this into consideration, I will be adding a few more filters to the inventory.

I just noticed HD has the filters on clearance but I still think the Wix from fleetfilter.com is the best deal
