How effective is silk as a base layer?     Is it overkill to wear silk under fleece?  Temps between -10 and 20 deg. F . for 8 to 10 hours a day.    Or would I be better served with another combination of clothing?  I'm trying to get away from the bulkiness the Carhart coat and coveralls  combo as much as possible.

   Thanks for any advice

Has worked well for me but it depends on the weather and activity, it is light and dries fast which helps wick out body perspiration when in heavy activities.

Edited to add the link:

Here is the link to where I purchased my long Johns, had to dig it out of my bookmarks.

I have a slightly different experience with mine.  It is good at odor control, and warm for its weight, but does not dry nearly as fast as polypropolene or fleece.

I f-ing love silk

I wore silk once as the only layer under wool pants and shirt while hunting in 33 degree rain.  I now keep a set of silk top, bottom, and 2 pair silk socks in my BoB.

get a pair and test it out.  Only way to be sure it works for you.
