Tent and sleeping bag. Both are not ,per manufacturer and conventional wisdom, to be stored compressed for long periods of time because it breaks down the materials of the tent(creases) and insulation of the bag.

How are you supposed to keep a BOB ready to go and not destroy your (expensive) gear?

Maybe have a "staging" shelf or area with some items stored properly but layed out in a fashion that is fast to pack and run?

I wouldn't worry about the the tent being stored rolled up and packed away as long as it was put away clean and dry.

The sleeping bag could be kept loose in a cotton stuff sack tied to your bob and ready to shove it in the pack.  That way it won't overly compress your bag and reduce the loft of your bag.

Couldn't agree more... my tent is in my BOB right now, my sleeping bag is hanging from the ceiling over it/

In my case, I have a get home bag. I use the military poncho and liner as a Ranger Roll, and another poncho a either a ground cloth or shelter. I'm thinking of doubling up the liner part for sleeping in. It aint for everybody, but it's more middle of the road.

Edit: you can compress the living hell out of them and it doesnt seem to affect the loft at all.
