[ARCHIVED THREAD] - SHTF For me (Page 1 of 2)

Hi all! I have been struggling with this post for the last few weeks. I mainly want to say thank you to the community and all that have contributed. Everything I have learned here and through out ARFCOM has really saved my life and others.
This is a long story and i apologize for TL:DR

There has been so much happen to me I can't begin to type it all here. I will just run through the main points and would like to share my experience. Please ask if you want further details. I am no expert and just voicing my experience and opinion. This is sorta hard to let out.

So.... We ended up homeless, hungry and stranded with just what we could carry. It has been beyond scary and hard. We had everything before that. Especially survival gear on my part. I thought it could never happen to me yet it did. No addiction, drugs or illegal stuff was involved or caused this. I guess I just want to get this off my mind and share what worked for me.

Here is what happened and when it started. There are so many more details I don't have room to type here -

- My mom developed Parkinson's then Parkinson's dementia - She lived next to me on a family property. I took care of her for ten years. This was beyond rough

- My mom passed while I was next to her in hospice nursing home - The stuff I saw there was a nightmare - Devastating

- I developed MRSA from the nursing home while my mom was dying. I was sick for months.

- My brother who I have always looked after, has cerebral palsy, autism and other developmental disorders also got MRSA from the nursing home. He is also diabetic. Two weeks after our mom passed, he had his foot amputated due to the MRSA. - Devastating

- Shortly after that my SO had a TBI due to an accident. She and my brother ended up in the same nursing home in rooms right next to each other - just weird

- The company I have been with for a long time and has over a 100 year history went under. I had it made. Lost my job and all retirement, health care, etc.... - Devastating

- The family property - this is where we all had a home. Me, my brother and SO. This is my survival back up. I built the place and lived there 25 years (I am in my late 40's). Everything was built and placed with long term survival in mind. Everything paid for and owned. So much gear, garage, hamshack, you name it.....  I was taking care of 2 people right out of the nursing home. We got a knock on the door from the sheriff and had 7 days to get out because the property was sold in the county tax sale. ?? Taxes were paid and there was a clerical error, there is still a major legal issue so I won't give details. However we had to vacate the property in 7 days with 25 years worth of stuff. - F'ing devastating, devastating, devastating

There is much more however I am way beyond TL:DR

I have talked to all my friends and many "professionals" and no one can find anything that I did wrong.

Here is the kick in the nuts. My best friend who is also my backup plan A, B C B E F G.......
Was found dead in his bed from diabetes a couple months ago...... Then two weeks later our son died after his 21st birthday. It has been rough.

Sorry for the long, way long post. I am getting to what helped in this situation

OP, I hope it is that God has great things in store for you. I also lost my Mom after about 10 years of Parkinsons. My Dad was there to care for her, but it was still a very..  tough thing.

I've been through "serial calamities" close, but not quite as intense, as what you are experiencing, twice. Including businesses, that I owned, that failed. There IS sunshine at the other end. In fact, I have been blessed beyond belief.

It's hard to imagine when you're going through it, but this too shall pass. Look for the small decisions that come along that will make your life, or someone near to you, better. It is how it starts..

My prayers are with you, OP. Be strong. Read the book of Job for perspective.

Just a small tidbit. Parkinsons. My Dad was a shit when he was younger. Skirt chaser, never appreciated the wonderfulness that was my Mom. When she got sick, he changed. He took care of her like a baby until her very last breath, at home. His 4 kids were all alienated until it was time to pull together for Mom. If he had not been given that trial... If he had not done what he did for her...  He would have died a very lonely old man. We are all closer to him than we have ever been now. At 88, he will die someday sooner rather than later. And he will die loved, admired, and cherished as opposed to how it was going to go. God works in mysterious ways.

Not to sound like a weirdo, but Ill tell you this much, you must be one beast of a mule to make it through all that and still be kicking.

That's a metric shit ton of fuck to deal with in a short period of time.

Im truly sorry for what you have gone through and what your going through.

About the house and property situation:
Correct me if im misunderstanding this:

The Sheriff's office shows up outta the blue one day and shows you a signed court ordered eviction letter for missed property tax?
No prior letters?
No prior visits?

You have had an attorney look into this and found no issues?

They would of sent a deputy at least to serve you prior and they would of continued to try and serve if they couldnt reach you?

How long was the missed taxes for?

Sorry for all the questions. Piecing this together

I saw you couldnt comment on the taxes because of a clerical  error.

Once you win your case and are moving back into you home, definitely sue the county of cost of vacating your property,  moving back in, and most definitely the cost of mental angish concerning the two people you were providing medical care to inside the home. You could come out huge.

My God! Thank you a all.

I will definitely address this. The taxes were paid to the address. I am/was co-owner, I have the deed of title or whatever it's called. The county applied the taxes to the address however they did not apply it to my mom's name. They said the system goes by the name and that's why it was never applied. Thus the legal issue. Big mess

ETA: I have been to court for this. The response I got was oh crap we made a huge mistake. I am doing my best to take care of this. It's rough

The reason to me for the thread was to let people know what worked. I am not looking for any pity. And yes it has been more rough and stressful than I ever thought. I just want to let people know what it's like to go from an office chair with everything to finding a shelter under an overpass. I now see why the homeless choose underpasses. I am also looking back on this situation and see key things that failed

Op you've been thru the ringer thats for sure, i've had times in my life that looking back i have no idea how i got thru also and i know this isn't the religion forum but i wanted to post some scripture that helped me...

Matthew 13 24-30
Parable of the Wheat and Weeds

24 Here is another story Jesus told: “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a farmer who planted good seed in his field.
25 But that night as the workers slept, his enemy came and planted weeds among the wheat, then slipped away.
26 When the crop began to grow and produce grain, the weeds also grew.
27 “The farmer’s workers went to him and said, ‘Sir, the field where you planted that good seed is full of weeds! Where did they come from?’
28 “‘An enemy has done this!’ the farmer exclaimed.
“‘Should we pull out the weeds?’ they asked.
29 “‘No,’ he replied, ‘you’ll uproot the wheat if you do. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest.
Then I (Jesus) will tell the harvesters to sort out the weeds, tie them into bundles, and burn them, and to put the wheat in the barn.’

Jesus is saying in this life we're gonna have good and bad, but in the end He will separate the ugly from the beautiful, the good from the bad.
learn to live with the weeds in your life, persevere keep moving forward and don't dwell on the past one day everything is going to be made right

just remember it's going to get better

I am also caring for a pile of sick relatives and can't imagine losing our property on top of it.

Survival isn't gear or tangible property; survival is a mindset.

You seem to have that mindset.  That much catastrophe would break a lot of people, perhaps most people.

Wow. I wasn't expecting all of this here.

I just want to share my experience and what worked for me. I am definitely no expert. I had a long post describing a lot and lost it due to hitting the back button on my phone. So I will keep it short. Ask me anything

Here is a list of things that have helped us. Gear most definitely helped through all of this. Stuff I bought 15 years ago I never thought I would use... I needed it.

- Mindset, knowledge. This is number one. And keep a sense of humor

- A quality backpack. Not too big, not too small

- A very good knife

- Tent

- Communication - this is big. Use the technology around you. My cell phone broke and that caused me to lose contact with help.

- Bartering

I will continue this. Just don't want to post a lot and lose it again

Ya know.... I want to try to expand on this. I have been around many homeless people. There are many I noticed that are habitual homeless. They had something happen in life that left them mentally scared. They don't know how to cope and have just given up. They are good people that just lost their way in this world. I ran into many veterans. I also ran into many drug addicts. They are also good people. They seem to be trying to escape something that is troubling them by using drugs. Yet they hate their lifestyle but don't know how to get out of it. I thank God I never went down this road.

And if anyone here wants to talk to an expert on survival, ask a homeless person. They live it everyday.

Thats a ton of shit luck for sure, Hang in there...

On a side note, I bought my first house/property Nov '15, ive been more then adamant about my property taxes. This state is weird, when you buy property, you actually pay last years taxes, etc. Plus we went thru a big ole 911 address change in the middle of me buying my house. Ive made sure to go to the court house numerous times to make sure everything is in my name and address is good.

Not only did we go thru 911 address change, but I changed my address for in-town PO box to rural box address, so you can see why Im being extra cautious about the whole tax thing..

I tried to type this many times and I don't know what to say.

Just losing so many people around you will definitely take a toll mentally and physically. Losing the pillars in your life makes it worse. When going through all of this and fighting to keep everything together, you lose the main people around you.

The big thing is we lost our son. After losing everything else. I just don't know what else to say. I want to make this thread about how I am getting through it and what worked.

I'm sorry to hear about your situation.  Losing a child is one of the most horrible things I can imagine happening to a person.

I'd have a hard time not "squatting" on my own property if something like this were to happen to me.  If it's because it's trespassing, aren't you trespassing by going under overpasses?

We've all read about folks who are dirtbags and squat in houses that don't even belong to them, or stop making payments and stay for many months/years.  I guess I'm curious why you are/were out on the street.

I guess I should check this thread more.

This has really taken a toll on my energy level  and health but I can't let up now. It's amazing how stress and worry can just zap everything from you.

And I was afraid of this... Had to take the woman to the hospital. The loss and the mention of mother's day was just too much for her to handle. She may be there for awhile so this will hopefully give me a chance to get some positive things done.

Thank you for the kind gestures. I don't know what to say as that is over whelming. I know some of the nicest people I have met are total stranger's.

There was no way in hell I was going to a shelter mainly because of the woman. We mostly used the tent and would go to my friends house when it got really cold before he passed. After that I was trying to be resourceful. Never did anything illegal. Luckily it was a very warm winter here. That was a huge blessing
