This guy appears to be superheating a wire of some kind, then touching off some kindling.

Copper or steel wire? Copper would radiate heat quickest but steel would be stronger.

I suspect an accelerant was involved.

Well that's an interesting file it away nice to know.

Same thing applies to most creative fire making, if you had the foresight to take the wire, why not an easier fire starter?  That puts it into the, like most others, find yourself stranded with nothing but found this scenario which is like EOTWAWKI Mad Max on steroids.

This.  Just a WAG but I’m guessing the multi-tool pliers were used to pull the bullet from what appears to be a cartridge case laying on the ground (low on the screen, slightly left of center).  The reason the fire flares up is because he’s not lighting the brush, he’s light the gunpowder from the cartridge.

I'm going to go with steel wire.  You can see the tree trunk smoking a bit from the friction.  I would expect copper wire to work harden and fatigue before getting to that point - think bending a coat hanger back and forth.

I didn't notice the rifle cartridge until it was pointed out.  I'd say it's a safe bet that was used as an accelerant.

I don't recall seeing this particular trick before.  Thanks for sharing.

I think this belongs in the "What to do if you are stranded practically naked in the wild" category. Fire can warm you, it can signal your rescuers, and most important, it can help you keep your spirits up if you are alone.

Now I know that it's likely that you won't have a strand of wire if you are naked... I usually don't... but this is just another tool in the toolbox.

As for the rifle cartridge, I hadn't noticed it myself... I was a little suspicious about that fire taking off so fast.

I forget exactly what I was doing, but about a month ago I was working on something.  Dunno what it was.  And I needed to cut a small paperclip diameter wire of some sort.  Too damned lazy to go get cutters, so I did the flex-flex-flex bend-it-repeatedly until it breaks half assed method.  I made the mistake of touching the wire at the bends, and it actually burned me.  Im not talking 'wow, thats warm".  I mean actual "ziiiiistt" holy shit that burned my finger hot.

You can see a little puff of smoke right before it flares.  I bet he is lighting the powder.   Still, the fact that the wire got hot enough to ignite that is intriguing.   The real question is what kind of wire is it?  If it was just standard baling wire it's awesome.  Not so much if you need something special.

Interesting, but as I always say, if you have a wire, a good round, a Leatherman to take it apart, the wherewithal to use that to start a fire, then what's the chances you don't have a lighter or ferro rod?

Damn what if ninjas strike again!

OH yes, most certainly does which is why you file it in the nice to know.  The problem is coming up with the scenario that has you naked in the wild with a junk yard or trash fire nearby with wire in it.

There's a lot of stuff in the survival world that fits into the "nice to know, may come in handy" category but not very likely.

Yes, it's rifle powder. That's how it burns when unconfined. I just threw an open pound on the bonfire last weekend.

It's never a bad thing to learn something new even if it only teaches you a concept or a cool trick to show the scouts.

I doubt I'll ever be out with a soda can and Hershey bar and be in need of a fire, but I can make one with those objects and I had the absolute attention of a group of 9 year old boys while I did it. That is useful, in itself.

Might be Nichrome wire [resistance wire]...

Also might be so-called safety wire, stainless...

Nichrome is what you need if you have a battery. I'm not sure it would stand up to the bending.

I know ductile, ss, snare wire will. I've never made a fire with it, but I've bent it back and forth trying to break it and I tuckered out before it did.

Not to mention, somewhat amazing.
