I replaced the water line from the well to the house yesterday.  I thought you guys would appreciate this picture.

The next time you see someone complaining about how hard it is to hammer in a sand point, or how expensive it is to have a well drilled, just remember they used to do it by hand...with shovels.

This one is about 35 feet deep, water starts around 20 feet, brick lined the whole way.  Hopefully this will be the last time I have to climb down in there to mess with the lines.

And now you know where the expression "colder than a well-digger's ass" comes from.

Been there done that except the well was laid up with rocks and not over 25' deep. I really wouldn't care to go down in there again.

Why are those pipes sticking through the side of the well?

Shallow well.  The water is pumped up into the house through those lines.  The one on the right (the shiny one) is the new line that I hooked up after the pic was taken.  The one pointing more or less straight up is a very old line that fed into a cistern that once supplied the house.  The other line is the one I replaced that fed into the pump/tank in the house.  It's hard to seen in the pic but there is a pipe running down into the water.

What went wrong w/ the old pipes, how old were they?

How far down are they where they enter the well ---guess, 3 feet?

How old is the well?

I wonder the technique used to dig and line it.

Interesting -thanks!

So 15 feet of water. Have you ever come close to draining it? Any idea on a fill rate in the well? Have you ever messed around in the bottom to see if there were any "treasures"?

Really cool. I wish I had one in my basement.

Nothing wrong with the pipes, I'm putting a new porch on over the old line and, sure as hell, I'll put the last nail in the porch and I'll have a leak somewhere in the line.  So I'm just being pro-active.

Frost line is 42", the old pipes are about eight feet down, the new one is about six at the well and four at the house.

I think the house was built in the early 20's, the deed goes back to 1848, but I don't know how old the well is.

This is about 25 feet from the house.  I know there are a couple of pipe wrenches in the bottom.  There is a 4" concrete cap so it's kind of a pain to mess with, if there is any treasure down there it is staying.

The table is very stable here, I've had the cap off a few times and the level is always the same.  Running the pump doesn't pull enough water to change the level.

There is another identical well out by my barn I installed a hand pump on.

Pipe wrenches???

Time for a Harbor Freight magnet...  And some para cord.

Love the history, no telling what else might be at the bottom...

Haha. Interesting thread. Water is 12 foot down here. Although most wells are > 35 foot.

I really, really wish I had a shallow well with a hand pump. I swear if I ever build another house for myself it will have one in the basement.

Yikes, guessing you don't pull those by hand. Pulling a submersible pump with 240' of pipe on it was a chore for my little brother and me.

If you don't have a well, think how much rain water can be collected

our well in Oklahoma was near 200' and we had two guys pulling and one on the roof trying to prevent the PVC from breaking.  The pipe went up and over the house and then down the other side then out into the yard.

OP, that's a pretty sweet well, how is your water quality?

Lots and lots of calcite in the water.  We didn't have a softener for a long time and faucets wore out quickly.  Taste is good even though we don't generally drink it.

I now run it through a filter and softener.
