I have been carrying a silva compass in my GHB for years. I just looked at it the other day and it has a bubble in it.
Is there a way to fix it and how do I avoid this in the future? |

I don't know a whole lot about this subject, but here is something I found that may help you:
http://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=49583 In summary, I think that this may have been caused from either it getting very cold, you taking it very high, or it getting banged around too much in your bag. If it is just cold and the seals are mostly intact the bubble should go away. If the bubble does not go away, then you likely have a busted capsule/seal, and it would need to be repaired. I've seen where some people will advocate for leaving the compass overnight in a mixture of water and alcohol, allows the liquid to gradually come through the leak in the seal, and then the next day applying some silicone to try to reseal it. I don't know if I would go that route. |

Silva ain't what it used to be. Although I've put bubbles in just about every brand except the tank that is camengea (or however you spell it )
In my experience, the bubbles don't affect the accuracy of the compass, fwiw. I had bubbles in my 80s bsa Silva.after a trip to canukistan and back they went away. The newer o.e doesn't have any yet...its about 9 yes old now. Both ride in my gear (one in my pack one in my fighting gear) ... Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

You might find that when it warms up the bubble will disappear. That's what happens with mine.
The bubble itself isn't a problem unless the capsule is leaking, if the capsule is leaking you may as well just drop $60 and buy a new one. It's potentially under warranty but expect Brunton to give you a hard time about it. |

One of mine developed a bubble at about 9000 feet in elevation. It was actually a pretty huge bubble or air space, when I came back to my normal elevation the bubble was gone. I would contact silva, they will probably send you a new one for free.
http://www.silvacompass.com/detail.aspx?id=81 I had one of their cheaper models loose magnetization because I carried in a pocket next to my cell phone. They sent me a new one even though it was pretty much my fault. I have three different silva compasses models and they are my go to. I have probably over half a dozen compasses total, nothing super expensive, because for me it just tells north. I have several old style dry compasses as well, but my favorite is the guide. Easy way to carry a handy mirror. |

In my experience, the bubbles don't affect the accuracy of the compass, fwiw. That's a good thing to know. Seems mine always have small bubbles in them. |
