If you wanted to introduce someone to the idea of being prepared for emergencies, and were starting with a Christmas gift around $30, what would you pick?

I am thinking of something like the Light My Fire Swedish Fire Knife at Campmor: http://www.campmor.com/SearchDisplay?searchTermScope=&searchType=0&filterTerm=&maxPrice=&brand=true&langId=-1&beginIndex=0&cg1=200368320&sType=SimpleSearch&cg2=200368298&facetFilter=Light+My+Fire&metaData=&pageSize=28&manufacturer=&resultCatEntryType=&catalogId=40000000226&searchTerm=*&facet=mfName_ntk_cs%253A%2522Light%2BMy%2BFire%2522&minPrice=&categoryId=200368380&storeId=226

Think this might get used daily, and has a "be prepared" edge to it.  Any other ideas?

The book "One Second After"??

It has to be something COOL and interesting to get the bug in them.

Also, it depends on the person. If they are on the fence, or just sell it as something for camping.

A few people in my family would be excited to get water filters, while the others would look at me like

Great “preparedness” stocking stuffers:

Good little LED light; either key-chain or pocket light…multifunction with strobe is a bonus
Small (preferably locking blade) Swiss Army Knife
Small first aid kit (backpacking types)
Sawyer Mini water filter
Quality emergency whistle

I'm a fan of having a bag in the car during winter with a sterno, bottled water, mountain house,  coffee can, Toilet paper, Blanket, sweatshirt, beanie, gloves, tire cables, Jumper cables, hot hands, chem light, and since reading on here I shall be adding road flares.

An every day carry light like the Thrunite T10s would be a good choice.

Got the T10T in my pocket right now. Loving it. The neutral white is one of the better color rendering whites I've seen in a long time.
Oh, the Leatherman Wingman and SIdekick are around that price range and they are fantastic MT for the money.

AA or aaa streamlight (about 20 bucks) and home depot has coast lockback pocket  knives this time a year in the front gift area for 10 bucks. Usually the coast knives are very decent knives for 10 bucks. Walmart has some sort of sog light and knife combo for 20. Leaves another 10
