So here's the deal, for my college English class I have a group project on writing a manual. My group chose to write a manual on how to make a bug out plan. We have all chosen our own bug out situation to plan for, mine is an EMP "event" whether it is man made attack or a natural occurring event like a solar flare. I have not written much about my plan and was hoping I could learn a little bit from you guys. If you guys have any advice on the subject it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Nate

You must have food/drinkable water, clothing, and shelter from the elements. Food/water is non negociable. How will you obtain these? Both must be procured. Both must be capable of sustaining you without poisoning you. Water can be filtered manually, boiled, or chemically purified. bleach can be used to purify. For the savvy, the oceans/coastal areas and southern swamps are the closest things to unlimited food sources, but both environments come with their own hazards. In south Fl, shelter and clothing is much less significant than in Minnesota. You also must be able to maintain your health, so knowledge in preventive medicine and first aid, prevention of environmental injuries and/or random accidents, etc. is a must. Shelf life meds or those that need refrigeration or other special handling will be an issue. Pre-existing health problems, injuries, lack of physical fitness, etc. make you a "weak gazelle". Densely populated areas will cause competition for resources, health and hygeine problems will be a major challenge. How will you be able to transport yourself without a motorized vehicle? If you do have an operating motorized vehicle, how will it be fueled and maintained? If not, this limits you mostly to transportation by something like a bicycle, or some type of beast of burden (which must be fed and cared for). How will you avoid obstacles?  Realize also that the only way to navigate from point a to point b will be either "knowing the route"- if the "route" is even navigable, which it may not be for any number of reasons, or by use of map/compass (or if you're really good, methods such as cellestial navigation).  How prepared/equipped are you to defend yourself or others you are responsible for against threats that may be presented? Have you accepted that other than face-to-face, there will be no communication with anyone, anywhere? The only methods to acquire new knowledge would be by "hard copy", someone else passing information, or experience. An event like you described would set everyone back a couple of hundred years, with less resources, an excessive population competing for these resources, and a lack of knowledge of how to do without them.

Find and read "Lights Out" and "One second after" for practical ideas.

Look up "Shelterbox" charity (google them, they're good charity) to see how they deliver aid in a huge plastic bin and what they put in it.

Map out in your mind what it would be like without violence or crime or the need for firearms - just dealing with a lack of electricity, period.

Try first in winter and then in summer.

How to revert or retrofit modern buildings for the loss of central air heating/cooling. Water and sewage. transport and communications. rest and relaxation. People would go through withdrawl of drugs, tobacco, coffee, and the internet. We might all be zombies not by virus but by not having our addictions met. Imagine what childbirth and funerals would be like if people in your subdivision had to handle these life and death situations without professionals.

Imagine what a Sunday would be like or how you'd handle religious instruction or worship in a mixed subdivision with some Protestants, some Catholics, 1 Muslim family, 1 Jewish family, 2-3 atheists and 2-3 pagans. How do you structure things to get along?

We tend to focus on firearms but 99% of the time we'll be worried about food or some human drama unfolding that has nothing to do with guns or violence (at least initially.)

distance to "home"-bol,etc is key in the plan

this dictates placements of cache points...lay ups etc.

it also dictates the style and size of your load out

emp..your gonna need a bike,,,or expect to only cover 5-10 miles a day if that on foot

youll need to consume calories..water...and be able to move that distance.

as said be easy on the weapons part ofit..

Don't worry I have already gotten it cleared and have written on the subject of gun control and fire arms before.
