The box that my replacement Stihl chain came in says "33 RSC3 66."
It also specifies 66 drive links, 0.050 gauge, and 3/8" pitch. Will any 66/0.050/3/8" chain work? Is there a difference between chains for Husqvarna, Poulan, Stihl, etc? Are there standard abbreviation for tooth profiles liek semi-chisel, skip, full chisel, etc? Thanks for any advice you can give. |

Yes. The chain you just bought is a green label "anti-kickback" chain. I buy the 33RS chains. I think stihl did away with the RSC designation and the new chains are just RS again. Nothing wrong with green chain, just doesn't cut as fast- IMO.
Rapid super comfort 3 is a full chisel safety chain. Stihl saw chain guide ETA: Any manufacturer of chain is ok. 66-.050-3/8 is what you need. I stick with stihl chain. I've used oregon and it did not last as long as stihl chain. Softer metal, dulled quicker, and though quick to file sharp, I don't have all day to sit and file. Cost is what comes into play there though- $27 for stihl loop vs $19 for oregon loop (locally). Buy in bulk and the prices drop. |

Best thing is, if he doesn't stock a chain, he'll make one (or 5) for you on the spot out of bulk chain. |

my dealer makes all of their's out of bulk chain. I think it's what they do when they have some downtime, as well as to deal with the loggers who drop by for a dozen chains. They drop them in Carlton or Oregon boxes and label them by hand.
FD carbide chain is one of the few things they buy loops of. Otherwise, there are to many combinations- a 20" bar may equal a few less links on a small power head, vs a huge power head. then guys have bow blades, and some one else wants to select a particular chain. |
