I traded a buddy of mine a basket full of bell peppers from the garden for a bunch of figs.  He's got a fig tree in his yard, though I had no idea they grew around here until now.

So...   what the hell do I do w/ these things?

Dry them or can them.

Newton them.

Rhino

Seriously though, it depends on how you like them.  If you have never had them, there are a dozen ways to try them.  You can even make a jelly if you like and they store for almost forever.   Stewed and canned. Sliced and dried.  All good.

Whole fig preserves. A delicious, sweet fig on a big ole hot biscuit! Yowzza! I made six quarts last month and plan on making about 12 more soon. My 6 trees are small now but I know where a huge tree is and the owner lets me pick all I want.

I have dried them.

For drying you will need to blanch the fruit first.

Have fun

Try at least 1 fresh, I really like them. When I lived in Fresno, Ca. they were all over the place.

They have a pretty short life just setting around fresh.

We make preserves, bake bread, and I have dried some and put in the freezer.

Maybe you can get some cuttings from the tree and start your own.

My wife makes fig-filled cupcakes. They're awesome.

If you get fig trees of your own, make sure they are a variety that will grow in your area. There are a number of varieties that have trouble in cold places. My grandfather tried for years to grow a fig tree in Knoxville, TN and only succeeded when he got a hardier variety.

It gets better. There's orange-blossom honey in the icing. I think this may be the recipe she uses:

Cut, wrap with prosciutto or better yet iberico ham, drizzle with wildflower honey, repeat.

Make something out of them and trade them back to your friend in exchange for a "sucker" from his fig tree---grown your own!

EDIT: I grew fig trees in Pennsylvania...they grow fast and really produce well.  Over-wintering care is the key.

The little slices an I ended up just peeling and eatin' 'em.  Yummy!

Thanks everybody!

Ideas??? Mine came out so late this spring I was ready to pull it out thinking it died.  Came out nicely but the figs aren't ripening.  I suspect winter will be here before they are ready.  I got 1 ripe fig off of it last year and the other 10 stayed green.

Same here. I got one ripe fig off mine, but have about 40 or so green ones that I fear won't ripen. They've exploded this year. I was using a tomato tent, wrapped in chicken wire and stuffed with leaves to protect it. I may have to prune them back and wrap with insulation this year.

They've actually gotten so big, I'll have to move them to a spot that isn't blocking my side gate.

Since we're on the topic of figs, anybody here harvesting paw paws? I had one last week and two today. Folks here don't seem to have any idea what paw paws or paw paw trees are despite them being all over the place. I love the things.

I sliced and scooped one out for breakfast this morning. This one had a great pineapple-like smell to it.
