| Who keeps bug spray in their preps if so what kind? whats the best? I normally just use OFF but if i have to bail out and sleep in the bush i want to have some protection. I think i need to add some for sure...maybe even in the bob. |

I use 3 different kinds of bug sprays here every time I do more than walk across the lawn
I've sprayed down to the point of tasting the crap when I go out to the range..... and still get bites...
Off, DEET, Perimethrin I mix myself, Avon something and couple of other flavors, don't want the bugs to get bored with the buffet.. every time someone comes they leave some other brand laying about. This year I started using Malithion on my trees and around the lawn for freakin grasshoppers. anyone storing pesticides for when the SHTF and you're REALLY concerned bout crop production???? |

We no longer use DEET, it harms plastics it gets on.
Picaridin works well and is available most everywhere. Better for you too, I think. http://www.google.com/#gs_rn=18&gs_ri=psy-ab&gs_mss=Picarin%20&cp=11&gs_id=k&xhr=t&q=picaridin+bug+spray&es_nrs=true&pf=p&biw=1272&bih=618&sclient=psy-ab&oq=Picarin+bug&gs_l=&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.48340889,d.aWc&fp=489be6fe0c569cfa |

Yep, interesting to see folks store heirloom seeds and nothing to protect their potential crop. You have to wonder... |

Okay, ladies:
Demand, CS. My purchase was based on a superstar recommendation on this forum (apologies for not remembering OP's name). I bought the Demand CS from these folks: Do My Own Pest Control They are a Norcross, GA based company and I am a FL based customer...we know our M-F bugs and hate the biters and chewers equally. Can use one basic mix for a lot of plants, vegetation and grass. CS also kills almost all bugs and I like the crystal structured matrix it forms (as a residue) to keep killing even after rains. You have to have time to let it dry and be careful with blooming plants. I also had to take CC courses years ago for a bug-man job. Skills! ??. I also bought a dedicated sprayer along with the smallest bottle (8 OZ) of Demand CS. The sprayer is pro-grade w/release valve all at: $100.00) with 'free' shipping. Staff was knowledgeable and polite. I felt good about this transaction! For personal use, Cutter Natural Insect Repellant works great on these brown-banded skeeters and all else, too. No deet! |

home made bug spray
Ingredients: 1/2 litre of alcohol 100 gram of whole cloves 100 ml of baby oil or similar (almond, sesame, chamomile, lavender, fennel etc) Preparation: Leave cloves to marinate in alcohol four days Stir every morning and evening After 4 days add the oil It's now ready to use. How to use: Gently rub a few drops into the skin of the arms and legs. Observe the mosquitoes fleeing the room. Repels fleas on pets too |

I use products with Deet in them, ranging from 23% to 45% depending on need. I store the pump type, because it would not require me to poke a hole in the can to get it out if the pressure was lost over time. I have found that the brand doesnt matter much. The walmart brand works just fine. |

We no longer use DEET, it harms plastics it gets on. It melted a G-Shock of mine once. It kept the bugs off for the night though. I would be interested to hear what anyone thinks about long term bug protection solutions. As in, all the DEET/OFF/Citronella/etc. has run out. What then? Just adjust and suck it? Or is fire just your best friend? |

As posted above......anything with Picaradin in it.....that stuff is awesome, smells great and doesnt melt your gear......I will never use deet again who knows what that stuff really does to you. If you have a Dicks sporting goods close by there should be sawyer bug spray there in green bottles it will say 20% picaradin on the front(thats the max you can get in a bottle by the way) Walmart sells Repel 15% picaridin right on front.....Cutter sells skinsations ultra light with Picaradin as well 15%
Picaradin has been used in Europe now for years and for a reason....it works! its just now really starting to catch on here in the US........also really safe on kids EDIT: Walmart and Dicks also sells the small travel size(pen size) bottles with picaridin.....I keep on in all my BOBs |

Or is fire just your best friend? We have used various essential oils as bug repellent. Citronella and Geranium have worked fairly well assuming the oil is not a diluted mix - all brands are not equal. The only drawback to these oils is that their effects are not 100% the same for each user, so you have to figure out what works and what doesn't ahead of time. |
| Deep Woods Off and the 3m stuff both are no good here. I can dose myself over and over with either product and the biting gnats act as if I was fresh out the shower. I have heard vanilla is the stuff for gnats, just haven't made it to any Mexican grocery stores that sell the real vanilla in alcohol, only the extract crap you find in your normal grocery stores. |

Or is fire just your best friend? We've been using less and less each year, and it seems the bugs are more plentiful. Long sleeves, pants, and hats. Bug netting is fine but it is cumbersome. Smoke builds up on your clothing and deters bites, as does the shoo-fly type of clothing made by several manufacturers. I am particularly fond of Simms No Fly Zone gear. Skeeters will drill right through denim if left a chance to do it, so I try to wear clothing that I have dedicated to outdoor wear. I use the Sawyers wash-in repellent kit. Works fine up here for the triple-attack (skeeters/blackflies/deerflies). I just have to remember to wear gloves when I flyfish, because there's nothing worse than stripping a line, anticipating a bite, and the fucking deerflies are eating the backs of my hands! In regards to your question about fire: Yes. Its probably the single most-effective bug deterrent when you are in camp. Keep the fire cold and it will smoke enough to put out a lot of bugs. In some spots I like to lob a huge chunk of moss onto the coals and let that smolder. Kind of therapeutic as well! |

I've used 100% Deet, it worked wonderfully, but I hated the way it felt.
My cousin told me about The Honey Guy. I bought some of his products and all I can is it that they work, and they seem to work very well for me and my kids ages 4 and 2. |
I use the Rainbow brand for utility companies, here. Work gives it to me by the case. The skeeter spray will keep anything from bitin, but it is a little warm on really hot days. My wife won't even nibble on me when I come home wearing it, so it helps there for whatever may pester you.

DEET
This new strain of Asian mosquitoes responds to nothing else. The citrus stuff works fairly well against most things but for only short periods of time about 1/4 as effective as DEET. Citronella used in enough quantity and conscious of wind direction works fairly well, however the electronic high pitched repellents are useless. For packs, I prefer the pumps. The trick in using any of this stuff is knowing how it works and using it prudently. The more skin you expose at night, the harder the task at hand. I've lived an outdoor lifestyle my entire life. I'm outdoors at night, well almost every night in summer. If I'm not on a boat somewhere, in a camp, I'm on my porch. Tj |
