Does anyone have experience with the Home automatic LP back up power generators? Generac, Onan, etc? We just bought our new property/ BOL/ ranch and are building a new home on this sight which will be our permanent residence in a few years. I have several Honda EU series generators but would like to have a permanent gen set that has auto on capabilities in the event of power loss. I'm looking at the Generac Quiet series that puts out 36KW.
Any cons to this type of system that I'm unaware of? I'm not concerned with the price of the generator itself, however what can I expect labor cost for installation to run? Thanks. |

I installed a natural gas 48 kwh Generac Quietsource generator in 2010. See link Here for details. Operating cost is ~$10/day above my utility rate, but the incremental cost of power generation is essentially identical to utility power at $0.10/kwh. The unit has been trouble-free, and the routine annual service has been excellent. |

36,000 watts? You sure you really need that much power? A generator that large is going to be a fuel pig, even when running lightly loaded. I am building a place for my parents on the same property and will have a shop on site as well. Yeh, yeh - We all know what's REALLY going on here...

Thanks. do you have natural gas coming from the utility? or will this generator be fueled from propane tanks? a couple of comments... -- Generac does not have the greatest reputation in the "normal residential capacity" sizes -- 10KW to 20KW. Kohler has a much better rep. for your application at >30KW you may want to look further than Generac. -- 36KW is *a lot* of power. that's equivalent to 150A service. just keeping a 36KW generator running w/ no load is going to consume a lot of fuel. do you really need 36KW on tap? have you done the math on what you *need* during a power outage? ar-jedi |

I overbought and I hate paying the fuel bill. I bought a 16 and I wish it was a 5-7. Grove |

You may want to consider two units, a small one to handle overnight efficiently and a second to pickup the few larger daytime loads only when needed. 36KW is indeed huge and will cost a lot to operate. The various brands have essentially two series, small residential air cooled units that are cheap, and cheaply built so they won't have a long service life, and commercial grade units that are 2-3x the cost, liquid cooled, 1,800 RPM and will last a lifetime with proper maintenance. |

If you really need 36KW, get a liquid cooled Kohler. Generac service is sub par IMHO. Kohler here too. Using a 350kva one commercially and a 20kw one for the home. Have someone come out and do load calculations. You can measure loads and such all you want but your county inspector is going to want hard numbers using NEC calculations. It will help you with generator sizing and what will need to be put on load shedding modules. |
