I've decided to change things a bit. I'm selling all of my guns except for an SKS and 2 G 19's.
the cash is going into savings and I have months of supplies. Anybody else tired of spending money on all of this stuff? The price of ammo keeps me from shooting much anymore. And yes I reload. If I need a better rifle of something happens, there will be plenty available |

The rifles will be there like you say but just like the ammo IF and that's a big IF anyone is even willing to sell...be prepared to grab your ankles. I think diversification is the key with prepping. You don't need a room full of guns or a $1mil in the bank....you need water, food, guns, money/PM's, meds, etc...so yes I'm really tired of spending money on everything but when the lights go out it's quite comforting to know "We're ok, we were prepared" vs. thinking "ok, now who's selling what..." and hope all your needs can be met. -Emt1581 |

With prepping, you get to a point where you have all your needs covered. To go ahead and dismantle from there, IMHO, is a mistake.
As for your weapons, their value continues to increase with time. And as far as the ammo you have stored, the price of it is at least double what you paid originally. It takes a lot of effort, money and time to become prepared. Don't go backwards. |

Quoted: My suggestion would be not to sell anything, but just take a step back for a little while from prepping. You may have stressed yourself out thinking/obsessing over stuff for a while. Just a thought. Yeah, I would +1 this. Also, if you are liquidating, get rid of the SKS and get something better, like an AK or AR. I'm not armed to the teeth either, but you can't do a tactical reload with an sks

If I need a better rifle of something happens, there will be plenty available Yeah, that's a great idea. Are you selling at pre-panic prices? If so, email me a list and price sheet On the other hand, if you don't own guns solely because of possible SHTF, then perhaps you might reconsider your radical plans. Me, personally, I just put money down on a .45lc lever action saddle carbine because I found one at a decent price. I'm building a .300blk (very slowly) as parts become available at sane prices. If SHTF finds me with an incomplete rifle, oh well. Meanwhile, I don't own a single round of .300blk, nor have I dropped the hammer on a set of dies. Actually, and if you subscribe to the "glass is half full" outlook, the recent ammo tribulations are kind of a blessing. Since I have enough that I don't have to crawl on my knees and pay double or triple the value for table scraps, I can take my erstwhile ammo budget and apply it to prep categories that I might once have been guilty of neglecting. ![]() As I see it, we're in a "plan A" economy, where the weakest return on investment you could come up with is cash savings (or a bank account drawing zero or negative interest). Hell, case lots of mac'n'cheese has a greater return on investment than a cash savings account! |
|
Quit reading or watching the news. Makes one suicidal when exposed to so much negative crap and that is all that is in the news these days. 1 AR,1-AK, 1-12ga and a couple of 22's rifles should keep ya if you do decide to start liquidating. Then 1-.45, 1-.9mm and a few .22 pistols and yer good to go.

That said better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Unless you really need the money, just pack it all away for a couple years. You'll come back to it someday and be glad you didn't sell. |

Makes a lot of sense.
Get out of debt (own vehicles outright). Own your home outright or have 6 months worth of savings to cover mortgage and all other payments... Get 3-6 months worth of staples for all people in your household + 2 extra adults. Get 3-6 months worth of consumables (detergent, soap, dog food, TP, feminine products, light bulbs, do-dads and do-hickies you normally need to get at local stores). Get a generator/solar/wind/dynamo, alternative ways to power stuff.... and fuel to run it (and thus keep stuff cold, or lit, or communicating...) for a minimum of 2 weeks. Get cash - enough to cover 1-2 months of expenses of extras - like fuel, other food stuffs, repairs - your SHTF emergency fund. Get a trailer and prep all your BOBs, bug out bins, GHB, and special, irreplaceable papers/photos/heirlooms in waterproof dufflebag or bin or bag - ready to roll should a Tornado pop up. Get all this - don't forget to make out a will, have life insurance and have copies saved somewhere in another time-zone with next of kin and a lawyer or person with power of attorney. MOST emergencies will be mundane - not mad max. The worst national disasters have resulted in locals being without power for no more than 1 month and needing to guard homes from looters no longer than 2 weeks (in most places, the boondocks or inner cities require guarding all the time right now). |
|
Step back form the Guns and Ammo purchasing for awhile and re focus your efforts into something different.
Find a hole in your preps and plug it. Make lists. Re-check the BOB's/GHB's, etc. Take a hike. Do an overnight BOB shakedown. Buy some cans of soup, some fuel cans, look into a generator or solar, etc. Plenty of stuff to do in regards to prepping that ain't just guns and ammo. Mow the lawn, sit in the hammock, watch a ball game, take the kids to the park, etc. Don't cash in your (or any) chips just because of the paranoia/hype. |

How many guns are you talking about?
I mean a lot, then it might be in your best interest to sell a few. I agree on getting an AR and a back up, to if can afford it along with spare parts. Ammo is easier to stockpile if you don't try to to keep 15-50 different calibers. Keep it to a few common ones that are more easily replaceable, even in SHTF. If you can sell excess guns and save or pay off debt, or even invest in preps such as a water source, Long term foods, tools and equipment needed such as generators, it might be worth it. |
| Personally I closed my savings account. I keep cash on hand for power outages and what not. Other than that it all went to paying off things. I sold off a lot of my guns for a profit, sold off a motorcycle I wasn't riding, and other things. With the money I've stocked up on ammo for guns I do have, basic antibiotics, water preps, need to work on food preps more. But most importantly no more motorcycle payment since its sold and laid off, bought my truck with cash so no truck payment, I paid off my student loans. I'm 30 and now only have one credit card and my mortgage and well if shit hits the fan that bad I won't need gold to pay bills because there won't be anyone to collect bills. Now if there's a hurricane sandy or irene again me and my dog will be fine. Everything closed for two weeks no big deal. I wouldn't rely on a lot of money in savings, is rather use it to pay off debt or cash on hand. Banks are closed for power outages and atms are down. If its a national disaster banks will be closed or you'll be waiting in line to get your cash out if the bank doesn't run out of cash. There's always mom and pop shops that will stay open and take cash when credit card machines are down. |

We have a few reliable handguns for defensive purposes. They will capably handle about 97% of the problems a gun can solve. A few cases of quality factory defensive ammo on a shelf. For practice we shoot reloads.
We have a pair of KISS AR15s, which added to the handguns will cover most of the remaining 3% of problems that a gun can solve. A few cases of factory ammo in the ammo locker. Again for practice and goofing off, reloads. And then we own many guns, suppressors, reloading equipment, high end optics, etc - that are hobby items. There is no non-fantasy reason we NEED any of this stuff for self-defense or preparedness reason. There isn't. OP, a pair of Glocks and an SKS isn't what I would personally choose for my defensive weapons, but if they work for you, more power to you. Get your financial house in order, and 15 or 20 years from now you'll be way ahead of the guys who lived on the edge in order to maintain a stable of multiply redundant guns in every caliber. Most likely threats first. |
| Unless you're in some kind of financial emergency, I personally don't see the sense in trading something that is almost certainly going to appreciate in value (guns) for something that almost as certainly depreciate (cash). But everyone's situation is different; what's right for me may not be right for you, and vice-versa. |

If I need a better rifle of something happens, there will be plenty available being a survivalist isnt about buying "stuff". i buy stuff, but i also put money into savings and getting debt free.(before buying my home). that meant i wasnt buying "cool" stuff like you see on here, i would spend that extra 1-300 on food, or ammo. you dont need stuff, is my point. you need the basics the rest is basically luxuries. do you drive the base model or the fullyt loaded one? they both get you to point b...just one has a ton of "easy" button stuff....and cost you twice as much. |
|
Quoted: being a survivalist isnt about buying "stuff". yep its a lifestyle, not a action op I would suggest looking into creative ways to increase proficiency across the board and build a more robust plan, especially if a short ammo drought is messing with you this much. |

I was feeling similar, I needed to get away from the news and all the doom and gloom. I'm not getting rid of anything I've squirreled away, I love the feeling of being prepared for whatever may happen, I just need to focus on some positive stuff for a while for my own sanity.
That said, I will always try to be as prepared as I can. |

Put me down for keeping the guns as well. They will cost more to replace than you would get from selling them.
If there is inflation those debts will become smaller. You don't need to sell guns to get supplies, just get a little at a time in what you think you are lacking. Plant a garden or something. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

All the talk in here about getting out of debt and getting your financial house in order is great for most of you, however there is a cutoff point age-wise - below which you're generally going to find that people are completely debt-free with the exception of student loans.
When you find yourself with no credit card debt, no auto loans, no mortgage, nothing but a big heap of education debt, then it doesn't make sense to waste time and effort trying to pay them down. Nobody pays any of this stuff back anymore; you pay the minimum (which can be as low as nothing, depending on the size of your paycheck); you pay it for X number of years (generally the time period is cut in half if you happen to work for our glorious overlords the government), and then they write off the rest. There is no ethical dimension to this, either; they blatantly and illegally modified loan terms retroactively during the nationalizations, so as far as I'm concerned they can go screw themselves. Younger folks in here should keep this in mind. |

Quoted: I thank you for all the opinions. I am not in financial straights and have months of supplies stored. I also have plenty of ammo.....I am not struggling in any way. I was just thinking out loud......I also have guns available next door...for free if need be. Slasher, We have tons of shit stored, not because we "prep" specifically, but because we're packrats, and our folks and grandfolks brought us up with the scars of the depression burned into their brains. I'm constantly buying stuff that I need/want, and at the sametime selling stuff that I no longer need/want. It's just part of daily life for us. Selling shit you don't think you're ever going to use seems prudent to me. We don't focus on "prepping", we focus on living the way we like. |

We're booth OLD SCHOOL arfcommers and just because of that I thought I'd say a big DON'T DO IT, YOU'LL EVENTUALLY REGRET IT, but who am I to tell you what to do? I'm just that dude from Argentina. Whatever you decide, good luck to you, brother. HTR. |
| I concur with most of what has already been said. I think that maybe you need to take a step back and find other things to do. It is a great feeling being prepared for whatever may come and in doing so you learn to live a more self sustainable life style. Because of this you could pick up a few new hobbies that don't cost much money and that "get your mind off of things". I chose gardening as one of my hobbies as it is relaxing to me, but I also "reap what I sow" and it helps to build confidence in a skill as well as provides extra food for my wife and I. I also like to ride my Motorcycle because it lets me unwind. I don't know what interests you but you could certainly find things that will occupy your mind that are beneficial to you both physically and mentally. I am also big into training with my dogs and am a Volunteer Firefighter for 10 years. Both of these are very physically and mentally demanding yet very rewarding at the end of the day. One of my main escapes is my motorcycle, when I ride I am able to turn off the thought process and just relax. |

I rent so I don't mind simplifying now and then. Everyone has to decide what they actually want and what they think they might actually need. Right now I don't really want to put a ton of cash in the bank account, but I could see unloading some stuff for current high prices and then waiting for a deal to come along on something big ticket. A buddy is kind of sort of thinking he might be in the market for a tractor. And a trailer to move the tractor would be nice. Being able to pay cash would be really nice. And makes it simpler to grab good local deals, I am in the sticks so yeah tractors are useful and while not super common to come up for sale they pop up now and then. And having cash right now vs. trying to talk to a bank about a loan can make or break the deal. And there are lots of big ticket items. Some of the stuff I have picked up over the years got hard to find here and there not too long ago. I am kind of like the poster above who said he has a lot of stuff and is constantly buying some stuff and selling some stuff. One thing I do is keep my basic lineup. That basic lineup is extreme for what I really ever expect to need to accomplish. After that lineup, the rest is nice extras but possable selling or trading fodder. I kind of recomend stepping back for a bit before selling anything. See what you really think on things and have some plans for that money. With today's economy there is inflation at the grocery store but now and then I see deflation for some items when someone local needs to unload some stuff to just pay some bills. It is not deflation on a wide scale, but it is common enough if you watch that you can pick up some nice stuff for a lot less than what someone paid for it. |
