I will soon be purchasing a hand-held GPS for hiking, hunting in heavily wooded areas. One friend recommended Lowrance brand. Looking for any recommendations (quality vs cost).
I was hoping to find a form that specialized in outdoor gear but was unable to find one. Any help appreciated. Thanks |

Garmin 62, any of the variations.
Also get the Hunting GPS Map for your state. It's a topo with land ownership boundary overlays. |

| I purchased the Garmin 62s some time this last year and have really liked it. I've gotten good signal even in dense woods and I was able to find free maps online for it. I forget the web site that I used for the free maps but I was able to download topo and hiking trail maps for my state. |

I have a Garmin 60CSX, it's a great unit. Does everything I need and then some. It's last gen, but they're all over ebay. The 60CSx is no doubt a great unit, and I had one until it busticated. As in something inside broke and it won't run off batteries any more. The 62 series has a few cool features above the 60 series. I really like the profiles, I really like that it will show all detail at .8 mile zoom instead of just .5 mile zoom, it's got more memory for waypoints and routes, and (with 3rd party software) allows you to make your own basemaps. |

I have a dumb question, but wouldn't any cheap prepaid android phone for 40-50 dollars work? That isn't a dumb question at all The answer is yes, it will work...until it doesn't. The reason the 60CSx for example is so revered here is because it is rugged, waterproof, fast, feature rich, and will work well in challenging conditions like tree canopy. It has features that my Samsung Galaxy phone doesn't have. It also works with any AA battery. That said, a $50 phone has other fish to fry over a $250 dedicated handheld. If you break it, who cares? Just grab another one... Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |
| Recently I upgraded my old Magellan unit to a Garmin eTrex 20. eTrex 20 I have been very pleased with the Garmin. Don't buy the Garmin maps!!! They are $129 and you can download free maps at http://www.gpsfiledepot.com |
