OK, I opened my cabinet and found my fero rods in a pile of grey powder.  Had about 3 of them sitting there.  When I looked at them, the look like swiss cheese with holes in them.  Looks like they have had holes bored in them.

Is that corosion?  Did water do that or what?  I THINK they came from Firesteel.com and are mischmetal (or whatever) but I am not for sure.

I had that happen to one years and years ago when I was in Boy Scouts.  I think it was moisture and exposure to salt that did mine in.

Use the clear nail polish you coat your strike-anywhere matches with to coat the ferro rod.

Will prevent oxidation.

Salt does it. Anything containing salt near them? I had one in a dog pack with some dog food do it. I read the ingredients in dog food, and sure enough, salt.

DocGP could you post a pic?  I don't have any information as to what happened, but there is a machinist's myth called tap worms- as in mythical worms that weaken a tap to explain why you broke it off.

I wouldn't have thought this could happen to ferrocerium, at least in a typical american house.  Learn something new everyday.

Just opened a drawer to look at some rods I bought off ebay a few yrs ago and they were in a sammich bag and OK.

There's a Pittsburg forge 1/4" ratchet in there and it's rusted all around the socket release button and won't turn.

2 Craftsman 1/4 rats look OK.
