Everyone knows I am a flashlight addict. I have so many I don't remember how many or where they all are.
For the last several months I have been traveling with my well worn Nitcore D10. This light had some teething issues early on when I bought it, so it was never perfect from the factory. A little polishing and tinkering and it was a trusted light for many years. I have dropped it on concrete while working almost as many times as I have dropped my keys....that is a lot....
I dropped it a very short distance on concrete a couple days ago and it blinked off. It was an impossibly small drop compared to the hundreds it lived through in its relatively long life. My faithful old light died permanently. I tried to revive it, but it's just gone and that is life. I stopped at REI to buy a cheap replacement that also used AA batteries. I had bought a Fenix E11 when they first came out. It was a nice light but the beam quality was nothing to be excited about. Now I really don't care so much about a work light so I figured I would buy a new one and see if they improved.......... The first one I bought only had one mode. Faulty right out of the box. The first Fenix light I can say that about. I took it back today and exchanged it for one that works. It has the single AA format I like, a momentary/clicky button, two modes (35 and 110), and on high it has the exact amount of light I need for my job. I was very pleasantly surprised that the beam quality was miles better than it was. It is not a great light, but I hope it's half the light that old Nitecore was. my new Fenix E11 Was my Nitecore junk because I had to fiddle with it at first and it died suddenly many years later, or was it a great light because it did what I needed for a long time. Don't get married to your stuff. Just appreciate it and use it. When it's gone don't morn it. |

I can't get married to my stuff b/c either my wife or kids grab it, use it and then lose it.
So I've learned to make due w/ what I had at hand and also to hide all the really really good stuff I buy. Except for weapon mounted lights, the only lights I keep on hand are the 2 AA indestructables from rayovac. Batman, I've heard good things about fenix. I may have to try one out. Thanks for the report. I can't say I've ever seen a nitecore for sale in my AO, but I'll give one a shot if I do see it. My family makes fun of my "flashlight, knife and gun" habits... |

I must admit I had to chuckle when I read you of all people not having a backup flashlight with you
it is a pain to have to replace a favored tool when on the road. I had a Quark 2AA in my pack, a Quark Revo on my key chain, and a Nebo Larry light in my tool case.
The nitecore used to ride in my pocket for lighting up scratch patterns in wood and the inside of machines. None of my other lights fit the requirements well. |
