Shameful to say, I don't have any decent sleeping bags.  All I have are some cheap sleeping bags that kids use at a sleep over.  Well, the Mrs. is about to go for some predeployment training and came home with this issued system.  The stuff sack it packs into is a back pack by itself.  It really is nice and heavy duty, but it's a very heavy system.  I'm considering buying 2 of them for us but wanted to come here first.  I am not interested in buying a bunch of individual bags to suit different climates, so a sleep system of some sort is best for me.

My question to you all is:  Are there any better alternatives for $150?

I also have been looking at these.
I have an old army issue down mummy bag, good bag just heavy for hiking.

The sleep system seems good, but like you said, with all parts it is also heavy.
Of course I don't need much here in Florida, even in the winter.

So for now still looking, might just go with the sleep system.
Not sure what might be better, many bags out there.
Like you said what do you buy, don't want several bags.

i made my own to tailor for each season.  marmot 32f trestle for year round udse, 1,5lb jungle bag for summer ...combine the two for deep winter up north use. i also have on hand 20f down bags to save weight in winter.

it gets into the teens/20's here /...... all but this year it seems,

making your own saves weight etc imho. vs buying a pre made issue style one,

This, along with the woobie, the canteen cup, and 550 cord are the best things the Army ever bought.

It's almost too hot for most climates. I've never had to use all three layers to stay warm. I usually only bring the black bag to the field in the winter and I do fine.

We got snow last night and since she had just pulled it out, I pieced it together and started messing with the dog while hopping around in it.  I then decided I might as well mosey outside and lay in the snow/grass with it.  I was wearing basketball shorts & Tshirt and began to sweat in it.

The only problem is, it's so big, there's no way it could be lugged with a 72 hour pack (or any back pack for that matter) on a hike.

uncle sams retail outlet has used ones for about $100 every couple of months.  Some ar eused.  Some look like the plastic shipping bag was opened but it was never actually issued.

They also sell individual pieces of the set.

The retailer I found on Amazon has "like new" ones for $130 or used ones for $48.  So, you can basically pay extra to get one that looks as if it was opened but never really used.

They also have "refurbished" ones for $50.  I think I'm going to get a "like new" and a refurbished.  If the refurbished sucks and it comes with tears that were stitched back together, I'll just return it.
