Looking for a World Atlas (and by World I mean WORLD!) that has the right combination of detail and content for a BOB. First post in the SF and I really have enjoyed what I've read so far. Any help would be appreciated and links would get you a smily face! |
You don't ask for much do you but here are a few ideas.......
I like Rand McNally maps while traveling They didn't have one of there own but they sell another brand. If you are looking for more detail then that I doubt you will find it all in one convenient book. You may have to have several different books. If paperback is not your thing then have you thought of a GPS unit. Not sure which models will hold that much data though.....I know the Garmin Rhino 120 will not. You could also download Google Earth or Topo maps to a tablet or laptop, as long as you have power to access the information. Not sure why you need that in your BOB......plan on taking a long hike do ya

You can print out free topo maps of your immediate area or BOL area, and toss a standard state map in a ziplock bag and be miles ahead (pun intended ) of most others in an emergency.Speed |

I can't imagine lugging around an entire US atlas.
I've never seen one that wasn't bigger than I'd want to hump around. That said, I keep local area maps as a mental refresher as well as a folding US map handy as a general guide. I know my local area pretty well, and if I was stranded outside my area I figure that I generally plan ahead and pick up maps of that area to carry in my car before I go to that area anyway. |

My advice would be to digitize that level of information and have a way to review it if its that critical to you. I keep digitized world maps in my educational files on a thumb drive. Rare that I would ever need them, but they take up almost no room on the thumb drive, so no harm in doing so |

the right combination of detail and content for a BOB. For me that means detail I can see with a pair of binoculars. In my world your white buffalo does not exist. You would have to go digital but the concept is silly for a BOB. Are you a college student heading out to Europe next summer? A pair of binos and compass will serve you well. Memorize roads and major geographical features, have detailed maps of any cities you plan to enter. This works in any part of the world, I just happen to know which ones I will be in if I am using my BOB. |
