Background:
Job requires frequent travel out of state.
Wife has health issues.

Considering stand by generator.

Received quote on turnkey installation of 14kw Generac for $7,000
This is a natural gas generator.

Does price seem ballpark reasonable?
Was expecting closer to $6,000.

That generator is $3300 shipped (and including transfer panel) from Northern Tool. What's bringing the price up to $7K?

I would think the installation. Get a few more quotes...I looked into it and I ended up just getting a regular generac 8K generator but I don't travel.

Yes, I believe the installation part is excesive.

I already have a 7,000 watt portable, but do not believe my wife could move it outside the garage and geit it started by herself.  Some locations I travel to best case scenario would be 24 hrs to get home.

14k is huge. What does she need to run that will use that much power?  All electric house?  Does the wife wait to dry the clothes until the electric is out?

For warranty and quality and finding GOOD service buy a Kohler. Im trying to replace 3 Generjuck 16kw now. You cannot beat Kohlers 5 year warranty and service.  Just pay the $500 start up fee and your good for 5 years. I work on generator's for our hospital and the affiliated clinics generac has been shit.

Installation fees are where they bend you over and poke away.

Case in Point:

My MIL is getting a new kitchen from Lowes. They wanted $5k to demolish and haul off the old kitchen. I said, "Mom, save your money. We'll strip it all out for you." Well, on Saturday, it took me and my son-in-law 3 hours to completely gut the kitchen. We even pulled up the glazed terracotta tiles on the floor. Five thousand clams for 3 hours work? I'm definitely in the wrong business!

This is why I try to do everything myself, and perpetuate this practice throughout my family. Sweat equity can really pay off!
