All...

Did a search and didn't see anything regarding this topic.  My apologies in advance if I missed a lengthy thread already.

I'm looking to add a water filtration/purification to my preps.  What does the hive recommend?

I'm interested in both small filtration/purification processors as well as larger solutions.

Thanks in advance for any feedback...

I really like the FirstNeed XL.

The unit filters out EVERYTHING, including virus's and is field serviceable. This is what I use for all my backpacking. I think general ecology makes some larger filters for boats too.

On Amazon

Review on my website:

I have also heard good things about this filter:

It is also serviceable and can filter over 13,000 gallons. The downside is its pretty expensive.

I reccomend a MSR mini works and MSR miox. one to filter one to purify. Only downside is the CR123 batts for the MIOX.

i cant find a retail link for the MIOX but it is a bit badass, but pricy grab one for SHTF if you want

Katadyn pocket. Expensive but filters 13,000 gallons. At one or two gallons a person a day that's a long lasting filter.

for hurricane back up to city water and what is stored... I use a Sawyer .1micron filter with the 5gal bucket kit....if virus is a concern they have a .02micron unit.... can be backflushed, so manufacturer clams 1 million gallons

I used a Steripen recently.  Works like a champ in situations where you have clear water, but if you have any foreign matter in the water you still have a problem.

Different filters for different uses.

Just add two five gallon buckets.  Good for at home in the event of SHTF.  Let gravity do the work.  Filters Protozoa, Bacteria and Virus.  Allegedly it is also good forever.  Just backwash to clean.

I also like the Katadyn Hiker Pro for out and about.  There's a reason so many people use them on the trails.  They're quite robust and easy to fix.  Not overly expensive either.

For a larger solution, check out the "Big Berkey" filters. I have one and love it for filtering large quantities of water.

Big Berkey Filter

Fortunately, I haven't really had to test this in a real life disaster. However, I did try it just for own personal training. It filtered pond water without any apparent ill effects on my body.

The Berkey has great reviews although a little pricey.
