I wanted to get four (4) 5 gallon cans as part of my disaster preparedness gear. I'm going to leave the 4 cans (without gas in them) in my truck (Tundra) in the event I have to bug out. From what I read, these are the cans to get? If I buy these cans, what else will I need to get with them, e.g., this, this for them to work?
Thanks for your help! |

There is a really good thread tacked at the top called "The Fuel Can Oracle" If I understand your plan...You want to have the cans and keep the cans empty, then fill the cans whenever you think a disaster is upon you? For that plan. Any WalMart plastic can will do you just fine. You will only have the gas in the can for a few hours. You will not need to worry about long term seal. Lowes and Home Depot sell anti tip trays to set these cheap cans into, so they are less likely to spill one your way home from the store. Now you might want to rethink your clever plan. 1) Local governments routinely ban the sale of fuel into portable containers whenever an emergency happens. 2) Local population buys up all the local fuel within 87 minutes of news of a disaster. So you might want to store gas in your cans to be ready in advance. Then you want the DO cans you linked. Or better yet the British Atlantic cans that do not have "Not for fuel use" stamped into the metal of the can like the DO cans have. |

I just ordered some from British Atlantic. Check them out.l When you bought the can from them did it come with everything needed to put fuel in your vehicle? If not, what do I need to buy with the can to do that? I read the post "The Fuel Can Oracle" (before I posted this question) but I was confused as to what is needed to put the gas in the vehicle. There were different spouts and someone mentioned that they didn't fit in the newer trucks because of changes to the fuel bay. Thanks |

Most of my gas cans have been upgraded to the Deutsche Optik cans like you are asking about-although I do have several of the DO cans with the larger opening.
Over the years I have tried several different nozzles, and now I don't use any of them. Instead I use a Super Siphon, and I don't ever spill a drop |

Get good cans and fill BEFORE the SHTF in your AO, rotate as needed. |

Good lord, your one wound up mother fucker. PA22s advice wasnt condescending at all, it was merely a suggests. I re-read his post a few times and I guess I dont see what you see, neither does anyone else. But I will add my own .02, I think its a bad idea to wait til the event is taking place to go fill your gas cans up, apparently youve never tried to get gas during even the minor of storms, its not pretty. These forums are all about being prepared, while its good that you want a good gas can, waiting til the event is not my idea of being prepared. |

All you need is a spout, aka "donkey dick" there are different types out there that work to various degrees. Since you have a modern vehicle you'll want one like you linked to one that is necked down to fit the unleaded restrictor in your Toyota's gas tank filler. Some spouts are cheap and leak a bit if you don't pour fast, others work great. A lot of people like using a Super Siphon instead- personally I don't like them but they are worth looking into.
Extra seals are a good thing to have on hand but your tank and spout will come with them. |

Yes he would. Does you cousin live there too? Will he be willing to open up the station at 2am so you can fill your cans, or will he be evacuating his family? Can he even get to the station if the roads are blocked? How about if you are at work or out running errands and when you arrive there are long lines of others trying to fill up too? How are the locals going to like it if your cousin lets you just walk right up to the front of the line and fill your cans, or will you have to wait in line and hope your cousin doesn't run out of gas. |

Either of the metal cans are great. I gave up on any of the spouts. I haven't tried the super-siphon, but really need to. I just have a half dozen of the long black funnels from W'mart and keep one in each vehicle. Slow but when I have fuel, I don't mind. Do keep something to throw over your cans if in the back of a pickup. All kinds of people had gas cans stolen out of the truck during the last hurricane. One of my friends was filling up the cans and had a guy walk up and tell him he WAS taking one, no matter what. Thankfully my friend keeps a 22 mag Ruger under the seat and he was able to convince him it wasn't worth it. Still got cussed by the guy for being so heartless.

Sheesh....this is the Arfcom forum. Take a happy pill and grow some thicker skin. If a reply doesn't apply to you, just ignore it and move on.
If you want a place where everyone plays nice, find a quilting forum. Eta: Oh, I support use of the super siphon too. Nozzles usually leak at one point or the other. |

Wow..
In your original post you never put in that you were going to.. you stated "if" PA was simply trying to help save you some coin an dgive you an honest review of your plan. You read it for what no one else really seeemed to. However you came out on the offensive and left little doubt of exactly what you thought. When pointed out that you might have taken it out of context you simply said you were done with it. I was raised when you make a mistake like that, you should apologize. To use an excuse that you are a minority so you get to fight.. that is just pathetic. Your question has been answered however, to give my comments I have those cans, any type of funnel will work, but the donkey dick style is the preferred unit. With no long term storage, I doubt you will need seals.. but they are cheap insurance. They may become brittle or damaged in storage so consider your storage method wisely. |
| I don't have any nice metal cans, but I can confirm that the super siphon is a great way to empty whatever container you use into your vehicle. It's relatively quick, and you don't need to stand there holding a gas can while it drains, you can be attending to other matters. |

Doc "I gave up on any of the spouts" - Why, do they spill that much and/or hard to get the gas in? I was thinking about storing/locking them in one of these http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/6427/chestboxessteelopen.jpg My truck is kinda high so it won't be that easy to just take/steal. As for taking it from me while I'm filling it up, well I'm always carrying concealed so it may not be in the thief's best interest to take my shit! http://img190.imageshack.us/img190/3240/imag0125qe.jpg That's a nice truck, and a nice box to keep stuff in. I think you've gotten good advice about what cans, and I couldn't agree more regarding the Super Siphon. I keep a jerry can locked in my truck box filled with non-ethanol gas, and I've been very happy to have it on many occasions. None of these were disaster type situations, more like helping people on the side of the road, making sure a snow thrower would start at a pawn shop, and the peace of mind knowing that I've got an extra 100 miles of juice if I need it. A couple times a year, I just siphon the can into my tank when I come across a Non-E station. My advice would be to swallow your pride, take the advice of the posters above, and keep your jerry cans full of gas. These particular individuals have given me invaluable information for a number of years, and have saved me very much time and money in my preps. You are paying a premium to have quality cans that will keep gas usable for a long time, take advantage of this... |

Sounds like you got it all figured out why did you ask for help in the first place? Just so you know name calling and constant swearing are not the norm in th SF forum. To be honest it makes you sound pretty childish. Most everyone over here is pretty helpful and easy going. Chill out or you wont be around long man. Back to your original post the metal euro cans are great watch out for the CTD and sportmans guide knock offs they arent the same. They need to have the redish/orangeish liner. I personally sold all my NATO cans and switched to Scepters but that was before the prices became so stupid. Both styles have pro's and cons but for my money I would rather have one good can than three or four crappy ones (like CARB wally world cans). |

Thank you! |

"Wow some of you guys are fucking thick headed. Did I ask you if you thought it was a good idea if I had gas in my gas cans, NO!. Did I tell you what my plans were other than the fact I was putting gas cans in my truck, NO. So you have no friggin idea what I'm going to do, what my abilities or resources are, etc. All I asked for was a little information as to what other items were needed for the gas can, which was not provided by you or the post I complained about. The guy said he wasn't being condescending so I'm taking him for his word and I'm over it. You on the hand have got me so wound up I'm going to fucking explode! " Sounds like you got it all figured out why did you ask for help in the first place? I already got the information I asked for but thanks for your valuable input. |

Your truck is almost full and you have an extra 20 gallons (150 miles est.) of gas that you can pull off the road somewhere and fill up your truck. B. Drive to Cousin Billy's Gas and Sip and cut in line and now fill your truck and the extra four 5 gallon cans while getting stared down by everyone around you. Oh, you have your CCW. So, with gun in one hand the gas can in the other the crowd move in around you. Are you going to shoot your way out and be on your way? The guys above have been here for quite some time. You might want to tone it down a bit or head back to GD. http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff124/flytosail/1b4793896a1d4e64551058ca3cafb499.jpg From Atlantic British. http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff124/flytosail/54b58724548974e6548e262b350a0b1f.jpg http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff124/flytosail/d4b5c6a0b15b7ece5a7571618b0d194c.jpg http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff124/flytosail/b4ec53efa9c4ecfd498ab2888e226b63.jpg Please feel free to ignore my posts in the future, thanks! |

You have a CCP in Cali?
Have you considered how to securely store the cans? If theyre metal they might be pretty noisy, and get dinged pretty good, if bouncing around the back of your truck. Whoever mentioned the 150 miles or extra distance probably was being overoptimistic. If youve ever headed to Vegas on a holiday, you should realize evac'ing any populated part of CA is going to be a nightmare gridlock. |

"Have you considered how to securely store the cans?" - I was thinking about building a container (Create like) like the one that was posted in another post. He did a really nice job on building it. I want to place that container in the secured mental box. "If youve ever headed to Vegas on a holiday, you should realize evac'ing any populated part of CA is going to be a nightmare gridlock." - Yeah, you got that right! |

TBH, I'm kinda liking it here, lots of friendly and interesting people. I do appreciate your wonderful feedback though, thanks |

Thank you for your condescending remarks however they were pretty much useless to me. If you re-read my post you'll see that I asked for information on what I should buy for the cans I want, which you failed to do. Easy there Sally. THIS^^^^ PA22-400 pretty much helped write the 'fuel can oracle' and has a couple of videos out there 'helping' with this question. He is right as rain, as is CJ about the siphon. Get good cans and fill BEFORE the SHTF in your AO, rotate as needed. I could give a fu~k what he wrote, it doesn't entitle him to be condescending. What if my cousin owned a gas station, which is 2 mins from my home and therefore there was no need for me to keep gas in the cans. Would he be right then!? Just FYI, I do appreciate people willing to help however I don't appreciate someone talking down to me!
Hold on there, FRANCIS. PA22-400 was very cordial and informative. Had I asked the same question as you in your OP and he responded to me in the same way, I would have thanked him for the info. This is the Survival Forums, not Friggin' GD. If you want condescending answers and abuse ask your questions in GD, not here. Chill out, or GTFO. |

Guys can we 'keep it classy' and get back on track? I feel like we all one big family here, that's why I spend 90% of my internet time here. A little infighting amongst family is to be expected, but let's don't get our feelings all butt-hurt and drag this out....
Just my .02 |
