For a brief time, you get to see my serious side. As a kudan in juijitsu, that would be 9th Dan Black Belt I have had a foot in the doors of the Orient for over 40 years. Early on I read a book by Andy Adams, 'Ninja, the invisible asassains', That gave me a desire to learn more about the history and life if these People. One source was Shihan Steven Hayes, the first and a very serious student of the Ninja.
What is the reason to be posted here, in the Survival Forum? Simple, contary to the movies, comics and many so-called Internet Ninja, most of what you know are false.
The Ninja were mountain people in Japan, they were different than the regular villagers. The believed in one G*d, a thundering god of the mountains....this alone has lead to the conjecture that they were fleeing Jews from the middle east. This holds some credence, in that the best warriors in Israel would have had the best chance of  fleeing that far. Also there has recently been discovered a synagouge in China dating to the 1300s CE.
But without their history we can see them as one of the earliest survival colonies. As they didn't fit in or associate with the regular villiagers...they developed strategies to keep them away from their villages in the mountains. These strategies can benefit us not only in the present, but also when and if the SHTF.
The initial strategy was simple isolation, in NJ that is really hard. But somewhat usable, I may live near the mall, but the road is traveled a few times a day by people in a hurry....they fly by my house. So isolation is a +1, but not just out of the way isolation, just blending in. A house on 10 acres a road is easier to find than one in a development. They employed camaflauge, looking like the rest of the small villages. tank traps and barbed wire around our house..scream, I have something you want.  One of my next projects is beautiful roses, with long thorns...they will look nice on a front fence and hurt like a hell when you try to go through them.
Another aspect of their development was the use of disguises when out in other villages. This was a development more when they realized that their skills were marketable, but they made a point to blend into the world. And most important is that they almost never got into confrontations. Why...they served no purpose. Yes there were battles later on with ninja armies siding with Samurai.
Early ninja communities were tribal, they were all related and did not go out and seek students from the surrounding villages, blood is trust.

CE = "common era."

You probably know BC and AD.  CE is basically interchangeable - slight differences, but close enough.

That's where Jew Jitsu comes from.

In other news, drugs are still bad.

We prefer you refer to it as Hebrew-jitsu.....hahahaha
really by studing other cultures and history we can find a way to survive our future. There is not really anything new, just new ways of doing it..man still has his nature. And we need to learn to deal with that beast. There is a new trend in registering gardens, the government wants to either add it to pump up the GNP, be able to confiscate the food or what ever. During the cold war one of the main means for food production were small family plots, try as they could, they could not stop them.
As for the ninja to enable them to move less suspiciously they adopted several disguises. They would pose as a tinker, a wandering monk, a tinker. But you needed to be able to go into the character at a moments notice.  You just can't put on a costume and do it. The application is that bugging out you need to travel as inconspicous as possible. An Escalade pulling an Airstream is a sign to 'Rob me' A beat up old pick up and dirty cap, makes you another refugee....but the mechanicals are up to date. What could you pose as to blend in?

As a ninja, I have cleverly disguised myself as a middle-aged fat guy.  Nobody knows.

I do think it is important to blend into the masses.

That was the disguise of one grandmaster....no one suspects the old fat guy....but the guy wearing 5.11s and raybans....gets the first bullet

FIFY

Read Stephen Hayes back in the early '80's.  Lots of his stuff resonated.  Particularly the part where the ninja pick and choose the best of all worlds rather than stagnate in set styles/methods/training.  So a good ninja school teaches firearms and defensive driving among other things.

Hiding in plain sight was another trait of ninjutsu, but hardly one peculiar to it.

Exactly, they adapted to survive, I missed meeting him at a convention. They didn't survive as a person, they survived as a culture for centuries.

He did a television show at one point where he was challenged to infiltrate through trained bodyguards and take the hat from "the protectee".

He spent a couple of days pretending to be one of the film crew, changing lights in the hallway, adjusting cameras.  After a couple of days, the bodyguards let him right into the room with the protectee.  He got the hat.

I watched that, that is the escence of how to survive. I worked undercover in a supermarket years ago, the manager wanted me to wear a suit. I am 6'6, that would work for 5 minutes. ..I came in like a construction worker, carried a list and looked confused, it worked I would stand next to shoplifters and they were clueless.

Probably the best way to "blend" at a supermarket for a long period!  You'd probably blend in with most guys that way!

Knowing you are a Ninja, old friend, explains a lot.

Shame Sweep doesn't post as often.  You two could compare Ninja notes.

Oh crap, now you had to go make me feel inadequate.

I have no idea how I got through organic chemistry.  My professor was like the lady who doesn't speak a word of English teaching Spanish.

Nope, one aspect we talk about is the gray man, what to do to make yourself less of a target.  How many guys are ready to go out with a tactical vest and an AR? That could be a target. Driving a big expensive BOV says rob me. What do we do to keep a low  profile?  I am working on te homestead, hardest part is I can not hide my nearly 10 KWs of solar panels. The 6' fence offers only concealment?

The masters of disappearing are the Ninja. Not only on a personal level, but as a village, granted they had a mountian location. But they were different to the mainstream population. Just as we are. When we have a SHTF, do you want to stand out? Where I live there are no houses with a big garden. When there are food shortages, do I want night time visitors? What sort of alarms can I use to at least scare them away?   How do you safely protect your spare gasoline?

This is where the hive mind comes into play,  Serious discussion on how to protect and keep what we have. How about ways to hide weapons in your family areas?  In NJ they must be locked up, HurricaneAllie is not a problem, she is safe with handling firearms and goes shooting with me regularly.  I have thought of making furniture that would conceal a short shotgun, but allow easy access if you know about it. Home invasion comes to mind as a major evolving threat. What do we use? Video systems, nice thorny roses? WHat do you think?
