I have been needing a new truck for a while now, and have just about made up my mind. I am looking at a '09 Dodge 2500 4x4 crew cab with~98k miles. My present truck is a single cab S-10, so there is only room for pilot and co-pilot and I neutered the A/C a few years back. The crew cab will allow me and the wife and boy to all ride together and still have room for shit in the back and/or pull a trailer. This last part is important also, because I have abused the S_10 more often than I should have by pulling things I shouldn't have. I am going to test drive it later this afternoon, what are some things I should look for on this new beast? It has the 6.7L BTW.

Thanks ahead of time guys.

Joe

Manual or auto transmission?

In before Ops and the gas/diesel pic

Joe you have read my "anti diesel h8 rant," but I will write some of it again

Get the diesel if you need the towing power.  If you are going to just go to get a cup of coffee at the corner store then a gasser may be best.

Wishing you the best

Be very aware of what the transmission is doing.
0X Dodge trucks have iffy transmissions on some models.

Drive it hard during test drive, pop hood and check around resivoir for coolant coming out cap. (headgaskets)
Check under to see if exhaust filters still there. If not, then it has a chip.

I have an 08' manual transmission.

I've done nothing but the normal maintenance stuff and even that get the coupon deal at the Dodge dealer.  Mine is still low miles.  I only use mine for towing.

What I can tell you is the 6.7L is just a bored out 5.9L that they bolted on the Bluetec stuff.  2007 was the "OMG! FED MANDATE" year which Cummins had its problems right along with Ford and GM.  Short version, they had to come up with the right program that fits most people on when to regenerate and prevent soot build up in the EGR and Turbo.  This build up is so bad, its trashed one hell of a lot of trucks.

There was all this talk then of have to run them so long before you shut them down, on the highway, and use you jake brake to give your turbo a work out on purpose.  Some people just simply bought the delete kit and delted the crap.  There's folks that claim the delete hurts them but that's bull.  If you buy delte with the programmer, its just a bored out 5.9L.  Because my usage was low mileage, I opted for keeping all that crap and simply being aware of the issue.  Even on my 08", its probably been reprogrammed three times, usually no biggie when I get an oil change.  I don't do anything really special.  I just tend to opt not to run it short runs if I can or don't mind really and every now and then use the hell out of my Jake brake to keep my turbo clean.

I may opt to do the delte kit next year.  I don't know.  Kind of hard for me to fix a problem that's never happened.

Anyway, I love the damn truck.  Although that almost 7K in weight sounds heavy its nothing to that engine.   I've never driven something with so much torque.  Its got so much, you go up a hill, hit a big bump, your tires will bark at you as a matter of principle.  When I find something I can't drive in the left lane on the interstate up Jellico mountain, I"ll post about it.  It has that much torque, 650 ft/lbs so they say.

Other than that, what can I say?  Its been since 08' and I've done nothing to it, not even a blown fuse.  I put new wipers on it.

What I can tell is you own a Cummns 6.7L and its BS with the buddies time, when you say bring your little truck over and I'll take it a ride, you mean it.

I can't say on these new automatics introduced since 2007.  They're German truck transmissions.  What I can tell you is the Cummins has a VERY long history of chewing up automatics.  It damn sure isn't crap autos, its all that frigging torque.  I actually worked on the design of the first B&C series (thermostat actually) and the entire program was delayed to sort out how to get it to not take off all four wheels barking.  The transmission they planned wasn't enough transmission.

That's the type power we are talking about.  This is no modified glow plug diesel.  This is the real McCoy thing.  You drive this thing, you  and the truck both are a lot better off thinking drive like an 18 wheeler not a gasser pickup.  I cringe to even think cut that engine loose what all it could rip apart.

Just a quick update (sorry, no pics yet)...Got it! And DAMN this thing has some get up and go!! It has a very light vibration around 65-70 that I think may be from a u-joint, but I will try and diagnose this weekend. I love it! Thanks for all the good advice, and PA...if I get it over to Texas, I'll take you for a ride and see if I can change you mind on diesels
