5.56 is getting too expensive to plink with, err, Im getting to broke to plink with it. Id like to use it less and stock it more.

I just got my first 10/22 on a trade out of the EE. I've only had it one day and I can already tell were going to have a long healthy relationship. I have just enough acreage to use it legally in my state (5.56 too but it's loud and I feel its rude toward my neighbors). I took it out for a little walk today and asked the neighbors if they heard anything when I got back, they said no so Im quite a happy camper. (Especially since I only marched 300 yards into the woods, shot a magazine and returned)

Question to my fellow preppers is: What goes hand in hand with this? Any common parts it goes through? What do I need to put back for it?

I bought 1000 rounds of CCI Standard Velocity for $20 when I picked it up. I imagine Ill do that once a week + a mag for the next month or three and I should be all set. What Im looking for here is anything less obvious. (Like with the AR, firing pins, bolts etc.)

This is my first 10/22 (its a Ruger) so Im quite un-informed on them.

Thanks

I think the 10/22 is the AR of the .22 LR world...  what I mean is that it is a very common rifle and as a result, there are aftermarket manufacturers for just about every part for the gun...  be careful, customization can become very addictive...

50 round drum for 10/22 >>>

In terms of "what goes hand in hand with a 10/22"...  a Ruger Mark III pistol comes rapidly to mind!

Scope? Magazines? Certainly more ammo.

Pick up a Volquartsen hammer, or a full parts kit. It will give you nicer trigger easily. A bolt buffer is also a must.

If you are interested I can tell you how to radius the rear/bottom of the bolt. This should only be done if you use a bolt buffer, but it is the number one reliability modification. The slightly increased bolt speed helps tremendously to feed from less than perfect mags and to cycle subsonics.

Add a mounting base of your choice for optics.

Add a couple of factory Ruger 10-rd mags and a couple of 25-rd Butler Creek Steel Lips (not Hot lips!) I've heard mixed reviews of the Ruger BX-25 mags. They may be ok now. I have no idea.

So far as parts go, you may want a spare recoil spring or two. They can be bent during reassembly if you aren't paying attention. Mine hasn't broken any parts, but I did install an extended mag release and automatic bolt release, both from Volquartsen. Both parts function better than the factory parts, IMO.

Thanks guys!

JFYI, its is a Ruger 10/22 with a Green Mountain Fluted Bull Barrel, Hogue Overmolded Stock, Bushnell 3-9x scope, and a Harris Bi-Pod. I also received 2 new stock barrels w/rings and a new wood stock so I have a feeling they are going to multiply in my safe.

I'm gonna pass on the drums for now but a matching handgun is pretty much mandatory at this point. Ill be picking up the Ruger BX-25's as fast as my wallet will allow.

Mr. Batman, if you wouldn't mind IM'ing me the process (or dropping it here in this thread) Ill be sure to print and/or save it, so I don't have to ask again later. Im looking into the buffers as we speak so Im sure the DIY mods will be in order.

Thanks again guys and keep em coming.

The hot lips mags can be a nightmare for the first 200 rounds. After that mine have been more reliable than the factory 10 round mags. They are sloppy but they are perfectly reliable. I was surprised myself!

Same experience here!

OP- I would go with a good scope mount and have a bunch of fun! I used to shoot mine all the time, until I bought a dedicated Ar upper. I rarely use the 10-22 now!

You should be able to get pictures of the bolt radius mod on rimfirecentral.com.

If you take the bolt out and lay it on a flat surface bottom down, you want to scribe a line 1/8" off the table right under the bolt buffer slot. Stand the bolt up on the back end and scribe another line 1/8" from the table on the bottom of the back of the bolt.

Between these two lines you want to create a 1/4" radius. The same as 1/4 of a 1/2" rod. This is best done with a belt sander. Just don't remove any material past the lines you made.

You can buy a piece of 1/8" thick aluminum to set your scribe lines. I used a Sharpie marker since the bolt is so hard.

The reason for this mod is simple. The bolt hits the hammer slightly higher, giving it more mechanical advantage to recock the hammer. The result is slightly more bolt speed and much better extraction, ejection, and feeding.

People spend hours upon hours trying to tune up the extractor when it never touches the rim until the case hits the ejector notch on the magazine. A well tuned 10/22 will run without one.

I'll second the rimfirecentral.com suggestion.  Those guys know their stuff.

I'm also partial to my Ruger MKii.  They are out of production (replaced by the MKiii that was mentioned above), but can still be had used.  I think I gave $300 for mine a few years back and theres no doubt that gets more use than the rest of my handguns combined.

Ditto on the Hot Lips.  I have 3 I use frequently, shooting many (20+) 550 rd remington value packs, plus a few hundreds minimags and a few stingers.  I've had very few failures, and I'm not sure more then a few could be magazine related.  I love the hot lips loader.  Maybe more importantaly, my kids fight over loading mags.

As far as what to do with it, Techsites make a very nice AR like site, and an extended mag release is a must.  I added a volquartsen trigger group which is sweet.  It's $200, but It gave me a spare trigger group to play with.  Otherwise, you can get a trigger job done, or drop in parts for less.

As far as spare parts, ruger is dirt cheap on what they will sell, and buyign a trigger group, or drop in parts address the items they don't sell.

Looking like the plan moving forward in the short term is a full parts kit and/if/or recoil springs, hammer, bolt buffer and modification, extended mag release, and of course mags and ammo. I can probably achieve this within a month, give or take a week.

Long term, handgun(s) and Im sure the spares parts will turn into spare guns. Within the year.

Thanks for the info and link Batman. There's so much to read and so little time, the lady is getting madder by the minute! hahaha

Thanks to everybody. Great info coming at me so fast right now my head is spinning. I think its time for sleep or something. Ill get some pics up tomorrow.

Stick with the BX-25 mags every other one I have tried has been a waste of money for me. Replace the sights with Tech-sights with these sights you have the same iron sights that you have on your AR-15 I was having fun with a friend who has his 10/22 with a scope we were about 125 yards away shooting at a 11.7 x 19.5 steel target and with this sights I was matching him shot for shot. Also the steel target is a lot of fun with the 22LR. I also replaced the stock with a Intrafuse T6 Rifle Stock from Tapco and Dura Coated the barrel and action.

I recommended some 25 rd mags in a previous 10/22 thread and the neg fallout kinda surprised me.  I must be the only guy who has had good luck with 25 rd butler creek plastic lip mags.  I would recommend the steel lips version, but I bought what I could when i was a broke teenager who didn't know better.  With that said...buy some good 25 rd mags (of your choice).  Also try several brands of premium .22 ammo and see which ones feed reliably.  Some .22 auto loaders can be picky on their diet.  Stock some good stuff for small game hunting and use the bulk stuff for practice and blowing off steam.

if you already have a .930" barrel, you can drill and tap for a cantilever mount (I usually use a Weigand) which will help alleviate any mount loosening problems with the relative thin aluminum receiver....the first year my friends and I shot the Chevy Team Challenge we were using Leupold mounts, and all three guns were loose (mine was bedded in cylindrical bonding LocTite and LocTite (red) on the screws)....drill and tap the mag release and LocTite a cap screw in place for an extended lever...as already commented on about the extractor, don't trust the extractor to remove a live round... look in the chamber for sure...

I personally love my Troy chassis. Its Fu@#ing awsome. Add some BX-25 mags and a 1-4 scope and you can do everything you need with a 10-22 from tactical plinking/practice to small game hunting. Its very light, only adds a few ounces to the stock 10-22. Its great......but expensive.

Don't know about the best way but I drilled and tapped a couple of threaded inserts into my hogue stock and used them to attach a Magpul rail.  My bipod is a Harris with a built in LaRue QD mount so I can take it off quickly and swap it out amongst my other weapons.  Be easy to then pop a light on the rail.

stick with BX25 mags or the Tactical Innovations Mags––both are excellent.

Don't forget the bolt release mod.  And if you want a matching pistol the closest thing is a ruger charger - same receiver, pistol grip stock and short barrel.   Bigger than your average pistol, though.

Oh, and may the Lord protect your wallet.
