Quick question for you Ham radio guys. I earned my restricted radio permit as part of my flight training back in 1981. Ive used VHF/UHF comms for many years in both airline and military avaition settings. Do I need to take the operators test for a ham radio?

Yep, no relation to ham radio. I think that permitt is all but useless unless you fly to Canada which requires a radio liscense.

For HAM bands in VHF/UHF you will need at least a Tech license. For the HF bands at least a General.
