I usually search for my answers here on the forum and with pretty good results, but i need to make a thread to get some hard truth answers so here it goes.....
A year+ ago my dad was in a major car accident and is now paralized from t6/t7 down. To say the least it really sucks. My parents live in NC.... Im in eastern NM..... Come -insert whatever ITEOTWAWKI scenerio here- i WILL be buggin out to NC from here to help him and my parents. I dont have the option to move rigght now. I've made the drive afew times and crap its a long haul om hwy 40. I know. Ive tossed so many differnt plans, what ifs, everything, around in my head and im now finding my self back at the drawing board again....originally it was zigzaggin across 40 to avoiod major cities in my fj.... What about the mississippi river ???What if it runs out of gas or takes a crap in the middle of know where..... With that in mind ive made 2 almost exact bob's for me and my wife which i will list in a later post ( they arent done yet but would be cool to have suggestions) My wife,me and the dog tryin to get to eastern nc. Thoughts? Opinions? Ive got pretty thick skin so fire away, yes i know its a chance to become a death march but wouldnt you for family? What i dont need to hear is dont do it, dumb idea etc... I know it is. But like i said, it comes down to one word.... Family. BOB post coming tonight or tommorow.... |

I'm in the same boat, my preferred bug-out would be to my cabin in Maine. But I realize that in a fast "crash" I would be stuck here in Kansas. Most who watch the SF believe that there will be an economic crash. But most disagree to the severity and the time frame in which it will happen. In a slow crash scenario the problem will be recognizing it in time to get packed, and on the road before the masses. If I run Major Highways I-35, I-70, I-71, I-90, I-86, I-90, I-495, I=95, I can make it in 36 hours of straight driving hauling a 16 ft trailer. But the Mississippi at St Louis is my worst choke point. I have good friends in Ohio and South Western New York, but until then I will be on my own. The biggest mental problem will be leaving everything else behind. If you read the Selco blog posts you will understand what I'm saying. Most people will refuse to believe it's happening until it's too late to get out. I have a 20 acre place to bug out to here in Kansas also. So if I make it to either I'll be fine. My biggest fear is getting stuck somewhere in between. |
| Learn to make your entire trip without using the interstate . avoid big cities . consider moving closer to the end location . If things get ugly do you have the ability to carry 1,000 + miles worth of fuel ? Are you going to abandon everything you own ? Just a few thoughts that came to mind . Have you considered moving your Father closer to you ? |

Ok here goes... During the Cold War the government invested money's daddy in plans and systems to insure "continuity of command." Because the .gov will continue to command there will be some level of function in society. So do not bother too much with a TEOTWAWKI plan. Make several smaller plans for smaller emergencies. At any time later you can combine these smaller plans to thrive in a bigger emergency. Work out 3 routs home and ways to jump from route to route. Have your documents in a grab bag and have backups to your documents. Keep your BOV as well maintained as you can...If your budget is constrained then learn to do your own basic work...Buy the best quality parts you can. Get enough jerry cans to be able to fill your BOV and your wife's vehicle...See the http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_10_17/643480_FUEL_CAN_ORACLE.html...Garand_Shooter has a very good deal while his supplies last...see page 11 and 12 of the linked thread. Keep your BOV ready to roll...top up the tank every day on your way home from work. Decide on "go" or "stay" issues and standards, so you can leave early...You do not want to be part of a hurricane Rita traffic jam. Network with people you can trust that you might need to rescue you along the route to NC. Of course these people will have to be able to trust you and should be able to depend on your help if they need rescue in eastern NM. Have plans for; severe weather, power outage, water service failure, and gas service failure for your parents home. These plans need to fit your mom's abilities for the time lag until you get there. The reasons for you to go to NC will probably be domestic. Plan and prepare to efficiently handle these domestic problems. I hope this helps |

Mic68, ya my choke would be memphis for the river...Ive been thinking aboutnusingnthe T.A.T. For a route plan..google it
. Thanks for the info guys ill keep workin on this. I know ideally move my parents here or me closer its just not in the cards, believe me i tried... Uncle sam wants me here for now and my dad is ptty well set up with dr's etc in nc so it wont work that way either. I agree withnmany that it will be economic....granted i still prepare for what i can.... And again like mic68 said its just a matter of figuring out when u leave it all behind and go.... I pray nothing happens, but if something does i gotta feeling its gonna be a looooonnnggg crappy trip to nc I feel so behind. I got 3 weeks of food for 2.5 people, 90% of 2 bobs , enough ammo to comfortably carry ....i know take small bites at the list but wow.... |
