OK ... I'm ready for BO, but I have four grown children that live with their Mom.
I would like to set up a phone number that would leave an emergency message for my kids to find my secure location. Almost like a security box only to be used in an emergency.

Any thoughts?

If the phones are still working why not just carry your cell with you and have them call that?

You can send a text message to multiple recipients. Text messaging (SMS) works even when mobile carrier networks are oveloaded.

In this scenario I would be out of cell phone range, and I don't want this message to be wide spread (as in a pre-recorded answer machine) ... by the way, tin cans won't do.

Set up an email address with an autoreply.    Do not use your normal email address.  You can do this with the vacation responder in gmail.   Add all phone numbers emails (for verizon - [email protected] )and other email addresses to contacts in the gmail account who you want to get the autoreply.    Set the vacation responder to only reply to people in your contacts.
Have them text message or email the email address.   They will receive the autoreply.
I have not tried this, but it should work.  As with any emergency procedures, test it ahead of time.

ETA:  I just tested this; it works great.

CB radio, linear amp, if necessary, and your own personal code book.

Ham radios on eBay are only $44 (shipped from Taiwan) UV-3R.

If real SHTF, licenses probably won't be a big issue.  You can make a "code word card", and tape to the back of it.

Google "100 most used" words, and select what you will likely need.  Then, add the SHTF words you may need, like:

hours, minutes, day, night, guns, men, sick, shot, trouble, etc.
