I've been considering storing diesel for my F350.

My initial thought was to purchase a home heating fuel oil tank, put it in my garage, pipe it to the outside of the house and ask a local oil company if they can deliver over the road diesel to it monthly.

I use about 40-50 gallons a week for work and personal use.

I want to store about 300-500 gallons.

Questions:
Can anyone recommend a source for the Tank(s)?
Has anyone else considered or done this?
Is there a down side I'm missing?

all depends on the company. my aunt and uncle had 250gals of super unleaded 50ft from there house with no increase in insurance cost.

Heres both my tanks. Its a joy to be able to come home and fill your tank and not have to fight the lines at the gas station.
One tank is a 275 tank and the other is a 1000 gallon tank.
There is no downside I can think of other than the investment in the tank and pump and in my case a block dike and building to hide it.

Don't forget the algaecide to kill off any potential algae bloom.

Good suggestion, here are two products I like for diesel.
The Stabil is only good if you are storing fuel and not using it for a long time (Like for SHTF).
Also a good antigel is good to get the fuel to flow better thru the pump and filter on the very cold days.

seems silly, my house RUNS on fuel oil (furnace) and LP for the stove.
nearly every home will use SOME kind of fuel for heating.
i dont see a diff if the fuel is going to be pumped to your truck instead.

Check your local plumbing supply house for the tanks.  Read Craigslist, here you can find them free for the hauling if you get lucky.

Here's mine -

Salvaged 275 gallon tank that dates from the 1940s, with a new hand pump for my off-road diesel.

I'd get that off the ground asap unless you want a rust hole and expensive EPA clean up bill...
At least put it up on some blocks or something...

We have a gravity fed 150 gal gasoline and 300 gal diesel tanks at the house.  These are pretty common at most farms.

The tanks came from the fuel company at no charge if I agreed to only buy my fuel from them (both tanks were used).  My only cost is a new set of filters every year.

I think this is increasingly uncommon, but it doesn't hurt to ask...

I called the company I use for my propane (they do oil as well) and they acted as if I were speaking a different language.

Rockyriver you have a nice setup, we are going to have to go through the containment deal in 2014 when we have to replace one of our current tanks.
I really like the out-of-sight-out-of-mind deal.
Not having every person who comes on your place see your fuel supply is a good thing.

Is this some new regulation?

Not unless you are hauling fuel for hire. Personal tanks are exempt. Just follow placarding requirements. If you install a small diesel engine and plumb the tank into the fuel system you don't even need to placard it. Storage tanks need placards, service tanks do not.
