| Had some pretty good luck today. I started buying silver a couple of months ago, I have always thought PM's were interesting but just never made the jump to buying any. Well gold is a little out of my reach in price which is why I started buying silver. Well been buying off of ebay as my wallet allows. Well the good news is that I didn't know of any shops in town that sold silver. But as I was driving through town today I found a little shop that does sell different collector coins and silver eagles/rounds and bars. They didnt have a whole lot of variety but that's okay. It will be kind of nice not having to order everything on the net. Any other silver new bees out there? |

Just got into the silver game, although I do all my ordering online.
Used to be into gold, but like an idiot I didn't maintain good finances and had to sell for not much more than I paid for it. This was when it was at $900 oz. Kicken myself in the ass now. I like the idea of silver better anyhow. Small denominations and all that. Gold is out of my reach currently. Not sure if I would even buy currently, I can't tell if this is a bubble or not, but silver seems the more stable PM at this time. |

Any other silver new bees out there? i've made a few small orders from apmex, but i don't have enough expeirience with it to give advice. i'm with the OP; gold is outta my league, but i do try and place a small order for silver every other month or so. it would be nice to be able to buy local, even if it was a tad more expensive |
| Yea I too once thought about gold back when it was way cheaper than it is now, but I didnt pull the trigger. Right now my plan is to pick up a couple of ounces of silver a month because thats really all I can afford right now. I am just going to keep on stacking smaller amounts at a time so if it does drop way down it really won't be that huge of an issue. But if the price of silver does drop way down then I do plan on buying as much as I can and stacking alot. |
Just bought a Morgan $, a silver to eagle, and a generic .999 fine 1 ozt for $40 today (total), but then again I am a pawnbroker so it is not that unusual for me get coins at that price. It was a customer that has brought me coins before, and he pays $5 each for them from friends and family, so he is thrilled with the profit he makes off them!
Will I sell them for a profit? NO WAY!!! I hold on to all the precious metals I can lay my grubby mits on!!! I can't help but think there is only one way but UP, when it comes to gold and silver. YMMV |

I find people who have small coin collections and offer a fair price, sometimes they take it sometimes they don't. The last guy I bought from had a good variety from dimes to silver eagles. I priced melt value for what he had when silver was still below $30 per ounce and offered him 10% under melt. He took it and we both were happy. Paid him $800 for all he had, and it is a good bit more in value already.
A friend of mine hits alot of smaller local auctions and estate sales and buys silver plates, cups, flatware, etc.... sometimes they know what it is worth, sometimes you can get it for pennies on the dollar. I have considered doing it but I do prefer coins for the basic fact they are easily valued. There are a few other tricks like asking your bank for rolls of half dollars and if they have any silver dollars in thier drawers. It's pretty rare but just last week I got a 1968 Kenenedy half dollar out of a roll, so even at 40% silver it was a quick $6 worth to throw in the safe with my other stuff. And it was free or .50 depending on how you look at it. I also have a vending machine that catches dimes and quarters every once in a while. I'm in the same boat as you, gold is just to pricey for me to add any decent amount, but I can pick up a few silver dollars a week form a local store for under $40 each and still not impact my spending, pay ratio. |

I found a coin place selling new proof 50 state silver quarter sets below melt. I bought a stack of them That's a great price! However if you are planning to use this as some kind of SHTF currency, it may be hard for you to convince someone that they are silver, as they are not too common. I'd stick to pre-1965 us coins for that. |

I didn't quite get all fifty states because I moved and they lost my address. 'Each set had the 4 or 5 presidents issued that year in 1, regular proof set, 2, silver, 3, platinum, and 4, gold. I never gave it much thought but, (now here's the question), Are the silver, gold, and platinum just plated or are they actually the true metal through and through? I had assumed plated, but might I be mistaken? Inquiring minds want to know. MIKE |

MIKE That's easy to answer if you have the slightest idea what you paid for them, if you paid a WHOLE lot, they are likely 'pure'. If they were $25 or $50 each, plated. |

By the way, does anyone know if there's silver in 1965 (not pre-65) dimes? I've come across a couple of them and the coloring looks little different from 'modern' dimes. The 65s and 66s do have a slightly different composition from the modern coins, but they are, in fact, clad and don't contain any silver. I wish I could tell you why these coins are different, but I don't know. All I know is that they are visibly different in their appearance and wear compared to other clad coins. |
