It's been a while since I posted a cabin update... probably last fall sometime... The whole project is really coming along... I won't have running water until next year but looking back it's hard to believe...

anyone interested can check out the videos on my youtube channel : http://www.youtube.com/buffcleb

I have photos and such on my blog @ http://www.bethnchris.com

Here's my last video

Nice cabin!
You ought to have your girl re-finishing furniture, she has that brush stroke down pat. I always made a mess of things when I was that age.

Looks great.  A journey of a 1000 miles starts with the first step, and you have succeeded.  I always love watching theses projects when kids are involved with the work.

very nice.

I have one possible constructive criticism.

That lumber on the side of the wall looks like it is in contact with the ground. That will enable termites to attack the wood.  Raise the wood off the ground or get the dirt away from the wood another way.

yeah... I have been meaning to dig it out a little... we don't get termites but do get carpenter ants... I have tar paper behind and under that first course of wood... but still need to dig it out a bit...

yeah... I can get a good solid half an hour out of the kids... they are always looking to help but don't understand that when you are first starting out the tasks assigned might be a bit basic... running the nail gun is a little beyond their ability :)

Very nice. Without getting too specific, where are you at?

Looks great brother that barn/shed extension is exactly what I'm planning to do to my little cabin.
How far down did you sink the poles?

yup... about half a hour... we are a little south of south dayton... in Amish country... most of the building materials came from them... saved a ton...

we have a hard layer of yellow clay between two & three feet down... the gas post hole digger bounces of it... it's very hard... so we dig down to that and just set the posts on the clay... no concrete... we've been doing that for about ten years on different projects and never had any settling issues... if we did not have the clay later I'd go down 3 feet and put one of the concrete pre-cast footers in...

good luck on your project...
