Who's got the best bang for the buck.  I'm trying to outfit some new Scouts with them.

Thanks,

I don't know....

My local academy had some Camelback brand for about $25

I got a 3L bladder from Nalgene last fall when they had the half off sale going

check the prices at Nalgene's web site.

Have a look at REI's site too

May not be the best prices, but that might give you a baseline price for good quality equipment

Awesome,

I'm taking a few greenies up to Scout Camp this year, I'm asking the parents if they can swing it to purchase these for them.

I'm playing with a 2l walmart-brand (Coleman I think). I used it to hike in the Saguaro National Forest and the Gila National Forest a few days ago. Doesn't appear to be a bad piece. I got it for under $20.

When we went further into the Saguaro Forest, I threaded an MSR 3l dromedary bag on the back of it. After about 3 miles, we (my dad and I) were about half way through the 5 liters.

Thanks,

Two things going on here:  Quality of pack, and also quality of hydration system.  Both have to be up to snuff.

IMHO, Camelbak stuff is GTG in both regards.  I seldom hear complaints about their stuff.  Other top level mfrs, like Hydrastorm and Nalgene rather more complaints.  No Name/lower-tier mfrs would probably be chancy as to quality.  Seems like it is relatively easier to make a decent pack than an equally decent hydration system.   It would be dsirable to standardize on the hydration system, so that some spare parts could be carried along, and serve as spares for all.  If you find a screaming deal on good packs with crappy no-name bladders, consider replacing the bladders as they fail with top-tier units.

If your going to order in bulk, Unlce Sams Retail Outlet has surplus bladders for 5.99$ a pop, and camelbak bladders for 11ish bucks!  I ordered a few from them and then got on ebay and ordered some cheap surplus carriers for 4-5$ a pop (the basic green carriers, no molle).  Its the cheapest way to go that I've found.

Thanks for the great advice.

I found a guy who's selling DRMO camelbak (100oz) for 5 dollars each.  Then Uncle Sam's Retail Outlet is selling surplus camelbak bladders for 11 dollars.  For about 22 dollars each I'm getting genuine camelbak 100oz hydration backpacks for the kiddies which are 100+ better than what they can get at the local costco / sam's club.

eta - I meant $22 each for the complete setup.  So it was 5 dollars for the carrier and 11 for the bladder, the rest for shipping.  So my total was a little less then 65 dollars and I have three complete camelbak (100 oz) backpacks that usually run about 59 to 65 dollars each.

I'm not following your math, but I'm happy you were able to get set up.

I went to Academy last week and set up my kids.  More expensive, but in-stock and local.  Then I had to get more ice trays.

You're correct, I wasn't explaining it right.

Ok, came back from Scout Camp.  Everyone loved their camelbak 100 oz packs.  Got plenty of fluids throughout the day and they like the mil surplus look.

I have to say, Camelbak stands by their products.

They all came missing the sternum strap.  I called to purchase them since most online retailers are out for the camelbak specific ones.  They said, no prob, we'll send them to you free of charge.  They sent me three at their expense.
