The AC in the new Subs is nothign short of shitty. They are cushier and slightly nicer then the older ones but for pure utility the older ones are mobetta.

He's been working on it for a while....I built the bumpers....tire carrier, and running boards...whole thing is sprayed with bed-liner.

I'm building a roof rack for mine....I'll post when done....may be a while.

I had this one a few years ago, well actually about 10 years ago.  Gas got up to $1.69 and it took $60 to fill the 40 gallon tank, OUCH~!

The good ole days now. I wish I still had it.

Most people fail to realize that vehicles painted with bed liner can/will still rust if you live in a rust belt state.  I ran into that problem before.  I have remedied that situation though.  Prep your paint and coat with P.O.R.-15 THEN hit it with bed liner.  Bed liner is all in the prep anyway.  If it's not prepped right, it will come off pretty easily.  If you want it real fancy, use Dupi-Color as it's inexpensive compared to most bed liners.  Then you can spray your color of choice directly over it.  As far as the P.O.R.-15, it will become one with the metal and not allow it to rust.  I did my whole undercarriage of my XJ with it.

Echo, that Suburban is beautiful.  I'm not a fan of GM's but that is truly a reliable piece of machinery.  You could probably fit a Yugo in the back of that thing.

POR15 isn't even a guarantee really. All DeLorean frames were POR15 coated from the factory and mine was still rusty in many areas and I've seen more than 1 rotted beyond repair. It will help no doubt but short of an etch dip followed by a epoxy dip you'll never get 100% coverage and the rust will still creep in. Hell I even had rust issues with the body on my D. At some point iron dust got onto it and formed small rust dots. They washed off but the stain was still there and had to be rubbed out.

Arggg, I forgot to add, my father-in-law was telling my to add zinc blocks to the under carriage.  The rust will hit that and erode that instead of your vehicle.  Then simply replace the blocks.  I hear ya though.  I am hoping for no rust on my XJ.  I'm sure it will be running long after the body is gone.

Ok I got a question about Suburbans.

Orginally I'd only consider them if they were diesel.

Now I've found a Z71 model with a 5.7L V8, Auto, 4x4 with 217K miles on it.

Very inexpensive (#3600) looks clean.

Should I buy?  It's a freaking tank, probably overkill for a BOV and I'm not sure I'd need the trailer anymore with something this large.

Life expectancy on the engine & vehicle?  Things I shold look out for?

The 5.7L is the 350 is a small block chevy that was first sold in 1955(?)  Parts are reasonably priced and you can buy new engines for under $3k.  Search my screen name here and in cars-n-bikes.  I have a few Suburban threads  I've got a good thread in the SF archives that goes over the Suburbans pretty good from when I was shopping for mine.

Buying a truck with 217k is a gamble. All the little things will start going out along with all the big things if they have not already. Look for a 87-91 model, you should be able to get one with 100-175k for under 2k easily. They are easy to work on, fuel injected, and parts are everywhere. They are also solid axle, and longer than the Suburbans that came after them.

I don't need longer (indeed in my area that is a strike against it).

However where are you guys finding these 87-91s with only 100K miles for under $2 grand?  The one I found was a 97 and it had over 200K on it.

Did have. I sold it when I came back over here contracting again to save on storage. It was and still is my dream car... they are underpowered turds with a list of drawbacks but man just soooo cool.

On a suburban note... I'll try to get pics of my work truck later today.

What do you mean they are not readily available? They are everywhere???? Anything from 73-86 will be carburated, but they are easy and relatively cheap to change over to efi.

the suburban, full size blazer, and crew cab pickup trucks/chassis cab pickup trucks stayed with the old boxy bodystyle until 91 or so I think.

As mentioned they started in 1973.

Depending on model years you do get into games where the fenders and grills won't always match up.  Some reading on coloradok5 will help you figure out anything you want to figure out.

2000 5.3 LS, 4L60E G80 in an 8.625

2000 = year model

5.3 = 5.3L v8 gas engine

4L60E = 4 speed automatic transmission

G80 = factory limited slip differential

8.625 = 8 5/8 inch rear axle

Your Tahoe would probably have a list that is a lot like that too.  Just have to read the code sheet in the glove box.  I have a list of the codes that matter somewhere in my data...I could find it.
