I know this has been asked on here before, so bare with me please...
If we get a true SHTF here in the USA, would it be better to have more in the lines of food/water, fuel, protection(guns ammo knives ax's saws ect.)...all your beans bullets and bandaids....or would you get silver and gold?
I could do more preps but am running out of room...I have a 3 bedroom house....with gear food fuel ect here....I have a BOL that is stocked for those that are going to be arriving, generators, fuel, motorcycles, quads, trailers...the works...with several natural springs and a shooting range plus it is heavily wooded over 100 acres.

If it ever gets to the point of heading for the BOL, then shit would be really bad...with that being the case, would silver and gold be worth having? I know you cannot eat it and that its dead weight until the world straightens up, or people get back on there feet within small communities and set up a trade system for bartering, but if that is a year or 2 or 10 away, would you really care about the silver and gold?

If a lot of people died in whatever might be coming our way, wouldn't you be scavaging through the area to see if AFTER THEY WERE DEAD  they had anything that would help you and yours? I would like to think you could find a lot of silver and gold from some of the people that are well to do, but have no skills or are sheep and thus never made it through the disaster.....which makes me think that I should spend my money on the things that I use, need and want now to help with my future...and survival.

I am at a toss up with getting more seeds and canning gear, lids jars ect....plus everyday essentials like tp, toothpast, toothbruches...I have some now and I just never know when enough is enough....I think that my main problem is that with rising prices, possible gov't shut down(whatever) I could save $$ by getting things now rather than later, and I have the $$ so I just want to make do the best I can with it and try to have as much as possible covered.. so that I afford myself every possible advantage to making it through this messed up world we live in.
I am curious as to what you all have to say....thanks in advance.

Get supplies, if you end up having more than you need you can barter them. Gold etc... is good but you eat it or shoot it.

This is the same train of thought that I was having with it. rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.
Thanks Jim.

Your dollar will never be worth more than today, load up on supplies, canning, seeds, tp, tooth paste/brushes any and everything that you can think of. You can always trade it if SHTF happens.
Gold and silver is nice but personally I think food and supplies will be  much better barter items.

I tend to agree w/ RR, though I guess it depends:  What is the SHTF and what type of preparing are you doing?  Are you thinking of just getting by / living, or protecting your wealth, ie converting your 401K into something more durable?

I am thinking 401k means 401k rounds for an ak/ar....I feel like life as we all know it will changing sooner than later, If the economy crashes dollars will be tp...
Thats what i am worried about, survival...wealth is never a question for me, don't care about it, I can pay my bills but if TSHTF...everyone will have to forget about that world we use to know...and live it the one that is upon them.

Salt, I totally agree with your thinking. Supplies, supplies, supplies.....stack them deep and today is as cheap as they will get...

Supplies first.

I see PM's as trade to fill the gaps I may have in my preps, or more likely for bribes. Think about the Jews who were able to save themselves with jewelry, etc. in Nazi Germany. But food and supplies first.

In my opinion it can certainly be a toss up.  A lot would also depend on how long the SHTF.  That said, I tend to lean towards getting the supplies/preps now rather than gold and silver.  You will get more bang for your buck in relation to supplies than gold or silver given what the PM's are going for these days.  Again, that's my opinion.  I don't have anything against PM's, in fact I think it's wise to diversify and balance your preps somewhat...what that amount is will have to be for an individual to decide.

For some reason, there is a part in the book "Alas Babylon" that comes to mind where one of the characters hordes all sorts of jewelry, PM's, and such only to find out that it was virtually useless as the SHTF progressed.  Granted, that's a fictional book based on a fictional nuke attack on the US, but some good points were made...at least in my mind...about having food and other preps over PM's.

it SOUNDS like you are doing pretty well financially, and have money to spend. since your so well stocked in preps already, i would add some silver, and some gold. you dont need 100k in metals, but if you can afford it, a few thousand in silver/ gold, would be a good thing to have if the dollar collapses. you could easily buy with silver or gold. example, super inflation, a loaf of bread is $500 bucks american, most wont be able to afford it, but a silver quarter would probably buy the loaf of bread, possibly a dime.

there is a lot of time that can expire as a country slides slowly into chaos, ( possibly years)and prices rise thru the roof, it would be nice to be able to use the silver quarter you bought for $7.00 bucks, to buy something, instead of 500 dollars... id add as many preps as possible, build a small storage building etc, but consider some metals, they have their place.

Thanks for the input....I am going shopping this weekend for more of all the basic's...I figure that way I can trade $5.00 worth of TP for silver, worth about $40.00 an ounce right now...hey I could end up with a trading post...Maybe I should add some thought to that idea....SHTF Trading Post...kinda catchy don't you think?

I am only going to start putting away pm once I have my preps nailed down a little better. Then its a solid idea.

Concentrate on food, expendables, and other supplies that you actually use.  You can't have too much... the more you have on hand now, the less you'll be buying at tomorrow's inflated prices.  It doesn't matter if you "stockpile" a dollar saved on two cans of corn or a dollar's worth of PM's, other than you can be relatively sure the corn won't go to waste no matter what, while the  PM's may end up sitting in the safe doing nobody any good whatsoever unless we see a true worst-case scenario.

PM's are good too, I just wouldn't make it a priority, survival-wise.

I would take food/water/guns, etc. over silver/gold any day.

Preps mostly and some PM's.  We buy a silver quarter or a dime once in a while.   The coins are not the focus but, I have number in mind.  Silver (Ammo, too!) can he an heirloom for our grandkids.  If the price drops, we will buy a little more. Gold is out of my price range.

yup.....or the "get both".....errr...."get all the above"...

perspective usually changes depending on the conditions around you.....imagine yourself in the middle of a desert.....in front of you are two tables.....on the first table is a shoulder bag full of gold.....on the other table is a canteen full of water.....you may take one.....that is all.

I have made some purchases and feel alittle better, but am still going to get more...
My main purchase items are going to be the ones that I think we all would use the most of and I am working my way down the list from there.
I feel with this economy and all that food and household supplies are going to be wise investment for the next few weeks/months....as long as we don't have a massive SHTF...I can get gold/silver later for a loaf of bread and some peanut butter from someone that was a sheep.
