as a part of my get "back to normal" after 7 years of health challenges.
I started riding an exercise bike in January, I picked up an Older Schwinn in 99% and am up to 20 min at about 12mph.not bad for an OLD FAT (90lbs less fat than a year ago)REFORMED 3 pak a day SMOKER IMHO.

whilst riding last month It dawned on my that as a kid I had a light and generator on my bike. and 20 min ought to be able to charge a flash light, radio, etc...

so I searched and ordered a 12 volt dynamo from a bike shop in Garland Texas..waiting for delivery..

so, what can we do with a stationary bike in the living room,
how would you set up a charging station

what else can we look to being able to hook up to the dynamo to recharge at 12V output?

computers, radios??

Congratulations on getting back on the bike.

When I tested myself I could produce just over 80 watts.  I pedaled at a rate that I knew I could sustain for an hour or more.

So to answer your question I'd say figure on having 76 watts or 1/10th HP.  Whatever you can get done with that

that will be just under 7 amps at 12 volts, enough to slow charge an automotive sized battery.

I just noticed that my son's keyboard operates on 12V.  Chef, you could treat yourself to a concert while you ride.

Congratulations on the new routine.

Ironic in a way, I also spent too long living in a world of cheap and available calories and now ride my exercise bike three nights a week to burn an accumulated excess of stored calories; however, in a world with a more expensive and limited caloric supply, would I be willing to expend the quantity of calories required by such activity to gain light?

I am up to two hours per session, my fancy digital display tells me I lose between 875 to 950 calories in that time.  That is a lot of rice to use up charging two deep cycle batteries.

Perhaps to power a radio for signalling if something makes you think you will be heard at the time but I don't want to give up that many calories every day.

takes more than 12 volts to charge a 12 volt battery. You will need closer to 14v.

rephrase the question a bit

I am wanting to hook up a three jack 12 vlt plug set, as ou would use to to extend your use of the cigerette lighter in the truck
be able to plug in 12vlt chargable items such as laptops, cell phones, flashlights, portable radios should TEOTWAWKI happens..

Got it.  Short duration use, I am thinking you could drive an automotive alternator (if you don't notice the added load of the Dynamo, and electricity is the primary goal of the exercise, step up the alternator size) set up with a 2 belt 3 pulley reduction system, if you can maintain 60 RPMs on the bike with the right reduction you will keep +/-1300 RPMs on the alternator.

My sorta math theory (anyone who knows physics will probably not agree with my numbers and is welcome to fix them but...) 18" pulley on bike at 60 RPMs to 6" pulley gives us 180 RPMs driving a shared shaft with second 18" pulley at 180 RPMs driving a 2.5" pulley on the alternator.

I like the automotive alternator idea because once 95% of the population runs out of gasoline, abandoned cars will be everywhere.

iceman,

you do know

I'm just a cook

CAN I Hook up a cigerette lighter to the dynamo and charge/run a radio or flashlight charger and WHAT Other ideas may one have to make use of it

it is here, and hopefully this evening If I am able I will figure out how to make it fit the bike....

thank you!
