Anyone who provides a needed service should be reimbursed, right?

My older brother went to Florida just after H. Andrew. After the 3rd day or so, there was a tire repair station set up at almost every offramp. And they were doing very brisk business. A HUGE number of .gov vehicles were getting repairs done.

Seems that when the wind blows, the roofs come off... and every roofing nail in the world is pointing UP. This makes for poor tire hygiene. Tire specialists were taking government scrip when they couldn't get money.

What other services would you consider after SHTF?

Wasn't selling ice for a big markup made illegal in Florida after one of these hurricanes?

if it was an extended period of SHTF, I'd say any mechanical/repair people will be in demand to keep stuff going you cant go buy. ie refrigerators - probably the only thing kept running when only the essentials get power.  generator repairs too.

I read Mr. Sasaki's book about surviving Hiroshima.
He set up on a rock and cut peoples hair.
Anything to approximate normalacy was welcomed.

Reminds me of my sister's story: She was into raising Arabian horses. There was a big Arabian ranch on one of the Hawiian islands. A big storm blew most of the island away. They were working hard to restore the ranch, with no power, no gas to heat water, etc...

One day a cosmetologist from town came by to give free manicures & nail jobs. The women loved it. The woman telling the story said, "We were hot and smelly, and couldn't even take a bath... but by God we had great nails!"

having tools and basic rebuilding supplies, nails, caulking, tarps, plastic sheeting will be huge.

Having a compact tractor with backhoe and bucket loader is always a door to opportunity, even in good times.

Chainsaws.

A really heavy-duty winch.

Trash pump.

Mobile welder.

My son is an electrician. I suspect if SHTF in any shape or fashion, he'll be in demand.

Mmm... just got a... Yep, I just got an idea! I'll invent a toilet paper vending machine! Probably already been thought of, though.

All 'price gouging' is illegal in Florida, now. Price gouging basically defined as those who are better prepared or more fortunate demanding market value from those who were less fortunate or less prepared.

Yes, to discourage people from providing help like this.  It was also done to make it less cost effective to ship supplies into the affected area.z

Tool rental would be huge, particularly if you (1.) had some way of still making credit card transactions afterwards, and (2.) had a large inventory of generators, pressure washers, trash pumps, chain saws, air compressors and nailers.

I plan to be the Grand Warlord of Harris County.

When the SHTF, I don't expect to have a lot of time to devote to gettin' rich.

no interest in getting rich in a true SHTF but my chainsaw, small tractor or mig welder could be used to barter service for stuff in a SHTF.

If SHTF became long term, I am sure food, water and ammo would be lucrative commodities for those that would want to try to become "rich".

Banker.  First you get the silver...then you get the women! I jest. But I gotta figure in a financial collapse, the PMs my hypothetical friend has are going to make him the equivalent of JP Morgan....
