I am wiring my 30 amp Reliance Power Inlet Box to my Breaker box.  Since it is 30 amps I planned on using 10 gauge wire.  Is 10-3 with ground basically the same as 10-4.  I understand the 10-4 has no bare wire but will it serve the same purpose safely.  I ask this as a coworker has a 15' end that he has left over from his new house build.  I am wiring it to a 30 amp breaker that will be wired to my main service. The service is fitted with an interlock device.

Yes, 10-3 with ground will work

Dux, if you would rather use genuine 10-4 SOOW cable just shoot me an e-mail or PM with a shipping address and tell me how much you need. I have plenty of it on-hand, and I'll happily donate some to help out a brother SFer I also have plenty of L14-30 plugs and receptacles if you need any.

Good luck with your installation! If you're concerned about OPSEC, I can ship it to your brother-in-law or something

Thank you Expy.

Over the years folks like you and others here have been very generous with your time when I've had questions or needed help-no matter how esoteric the subject matter

Trying to pay back some of that generosity is the very least that I can do. It's also the best way I know of to express my gratitude

You could have been a billionaire a few years back after the big ice storm. :)

Those things were just plain unavailable. I wired straight into the generator, and straight into the crossover panel to get power up. I watched afterward, and it was at least a month before they started showing up again.

Good idea to have some spares around for neighbors/friends if it does get bad for any significant amount of time. I'll grab some next time I'm at the depot.

Yeah, it was the 08 storm that prompted me to stack 'em deep. I use a lot of different twist-locks at work (L5-20, L6-20, L14-20, L5-30, L6-30, and L14-30). After the storm hit I was really hurting for L6-30 and L14-30 plugs in particular.

I went everywhere. No luck, and I did it within a day or so of the storm.

I do not have an NEC reference, but I do not believe you can substitute SOOW cable for NM cable for this application.  Save the SOOW for portable cabling applications and use NM for permanent wiring.

I am talking about premises wiring: inlet box to breaker.

10-4 NM will work fine.

C-JAN thanks for the offer.  Is the SO cable the stuff that the extension cords are made of.  I just purchased a 25' cord with the twistlock on each end 2 weeks ago.  As I get extra funds I am trying to finish this project.   I will post pics of this project as soon as I get the items assembled and installed.  I will do a short write-up using the interlock kit as it seems kinda cheesy but it does work well for the price.  It will be after next week though as I am going to show the steps necessary to build a water powered sausage stuffer I built out of pvc pipe.  It will be in the food and garden forum.  I will post a link here though if anybody is interested.  We are making our last batch (hopefully) this weekend and I will be rebuilding the prototype and highlighting the 100 pounder I made.

Dux, the 10-4 SOOW cable I have on-hand is about an inch thick and has a heavy weatherproof rubber outer jacket. It looks like this (the first pic is actually 10-3 cable, but it looks the same):

Is the cordset you need to make intended to be portable-like a glorified extension cord? (I'm thinking about what BSF said above).

Let me know if you want some. I have to ship some network hardware out via FedEx on Thursday, so printing out an extra shipping label for you would be no trouble at all

Very nice CJan!  I've been lurking this forum for awhile and feel a generator project in my very near future.  Kinda like the Ham Radio forum, I've got a special folder to drop interesting pics of different setups I like.  The latest ice storm in Indiana jolted me into reassessing my preps.

Just so you guys know, If you go to an electrical supply house and ask for 10/3 SO cord you will get a cord with a black, a white, and a green.  In flexible cords like SO you need to count all wires.  If you were to ask for 10/3 NM you would get a black, a red, a white, and a bare ground.  Go figure.

Just thought that might save somebody a costly mistake when you buy 30 feet of 10/3 SO cord and find out you are missing a conductor.

Dammit, sorry Dux-there's no message popup when I'm using the mobile version for some reason. Hang on while I switch over.
