I looking for a recommendation for a battery maintainer for my battery backup system I am building. If it matters I will be running 2 banks of 5 batteries each.

What kind of batteries and how are they hooked up?

Not from personal experience yet, but here is one that I'm going to order...on sale at northern tool too...great reviews to top it off.  Says it will maintain up to 5 batteries at once.

banks of 5 batteries?
So you have a 30 volt system?
What batteries do you use, and how are they configured?

I've been exceptionally pleased with the results I have had with Battery Minder charger/maintainers.

I use one of these to maintain my 36V golf cart for about 7 months over the summer.
They work very well.

We know what kind of batteries now.

But how are they hooked up???

I said above that I have not hooked anything up yet, I'm just buying parts until I get them all.

How do you PLAN on hooking them up?

Series or parallel?

How many strings?

6V, 12V, 24V, 36V?

You gotta give us something to work with.

The battery maintainers we linked above will work on all batteries.
You need a separate charger from the maintainer.
The maintainer deals primarily with sulfation.

Paul updated his thread with a solar charger setup.  Some of that equipment may be similar to what you want to look for.

OK, so how are you PLANNING on hooking them up?

I can't see the pics in Paul's thread from where I am and he doesn't state in the text what the voltage of the individual bateeries is.
I can't remember if they are 2V, 3V or 6V batteries.

So ASSUMING the OP wants 2 strings of 5 SERIES connected batteries, that gives string voltages of either 10V, 15V or 30V dependng on the cell voltages.
Those are odd voltages.  The standards are multiples of 6 or 12, usually.
Thus the confusion!

I think I'm going to need some novacaine or NOx for myself before this is over...

OK.

Those are 12V batteries.

You said you want 2 strings of 5 batts each.

A series string of 5 batts will give you 60V nominal.
Which I think is a little high for what I am guessing you are trying to do.

So I am guessing you want to do two completely separate systems and use a parallel string of 5 batteries and retain the string voltage at 12V.
Like in Taft's thread.  Two 675 Ah strings (8kW each).

Sigh...

Is this what you are trying to do?

Please heed Taft's warning.
***** Caveat ***** Do not attempt this unless you have serious professional help.
Do you see how thick those cables are he's using?  Care to guess why they are so thick?
600 Amps for an HOUR!  You said pro install, that's good.

And by the way, Taft is using the exact Battery Maintainer that both Gamma762 and I recommended.

Which was what you original question was, wasn't it?

I swear I feel like the guy in Scanners when his head explodes.
