I need to pick up a genarator. Nothing to big. I want to be able to run my chest freezer and fridge.

Question for those who actually own gennys. For $300-$500 what is the best way to go. I don't want to buy online and don't want Harbor Freight. I live in western Washington.

I'd watch for a used Honda EU2000.  I've seen them $500-$600.  You could buy a new one for $900 (or less) when they're on sale.

Just got a Generac GP5500 from Amazon for $649 delivered. It was on-line though.

Start watching Craigslist.  the 3.5 kW Chinese generators go on sale once in a while for $350 or so.  I have one, it works fine.

hit up a pawn shop in the area...I got a coleman 1850 for just that purpose for $150.00.

passed on a champinion 3k for $350 about 2 months ago.....a friend of mine bought it.....it had an oversized fuel tank on it....held 10 instead of 4gallons.

good luck....
