So say you can only have one Pellet/BB gun with 500rds of ammo, or a Single Shot centerfire rifle of your choice and 50rds of ammo..This is meant to last at least 10 years.

Depending on the region I bet with 50 rds of .22lr many could survive over a year depending on your ability to preserve meat. I would rather take my chances with the rimfire than a pellet gun. If my life depended on it I would rather the ability to take game at 100+ yards than at pellet gun range. I think 10 years is unrealistic though. |

If you are hunting and making every shot count, I'd go with the centerfire and 50 rounds. I could actually kill a deer or similar with it. I'd lean toward either a .223 rifle or more likely, a .248. If you were relying on this to last 10 years, 50 rounds MIGHT do it but probably not. If the rifle is zeroed 50 rounds MIGHT be enough....that's 5 deer per year. On the other hand, if things were that bad, I'm guessing that we have much greater problems to worry about. |

i'd rather have the rifle with 50 rds.
if im using the rifle to take game for food, i could live with taking 5 deer a year in a survival situation. i wouldnt take chances on shooting a deer, only shoot at the ones i can kill for sure. i dont think ive even shot 50 rds in the past ten years out of my 30-30. i collect guns and do a little practicing, but i'm not big into shooting sports. so this would work for me. anyway, if im trying to survive, i would be trapping also. |
| Has anyone considered the value of a BB or pellet gun to hunt small game at a lower cost (rifle & ammo) and because it is not nearly as loud as .22 caliber options? I'm certainly not recommending to use it for larger game or defense. However, the initial expense is extremely reasonable ($40 - $70) and the cost for 6000 BBs is roughly $9. ...just something to think about! |

Ok since you dont see the questions being asked, or possible topics that are likely to come from it..I am going to go ahead and post 3-4 new topics in the survival discussion forum. I will also do it in every other forum vs. having a fun topic people can be creative and think outside the box..Everyone can thank these two guys... That would be more trolling posting 4 topics, when i know it all can be discussed in one..But I understand some dont get it..BTW, Reminds me of my Kids school where Everyone is a winner in sports, no scores kept.. A real true restriction some preppers face is ammo limtis..As some jurisdictions limit the amount of ammo with powder that can be stored, BB or pellets could be ones only choice.This is true in Colleges where kids cant have guns, but can have BB guns...See how thinking outside the box works! For a survival discussion those saying, a survival scenario I bring up that could likely happen is stupid topic? This whole entire forum and everyone preps is based off "fantasy"..Non gunners will say we are prepping for X reason, and We are nutjob end of the world nuts.. It is a stupid topic/reply to call any topic that discusses any possible scenario "stupid" when this is reality/fact when they are currently local laws limiting the amount of ammoa person may have.Also kids at school who cant have guns, but can have a BB gun it reality..
This is a Prepping forum, its to give you ideas on what it takes to survive and what preps you can plan on having, and if you lost all your preps, how to get by say on a BB gun, if need be.. BTW, If we cant discuss a survival topic without trolling Consider it your types fault, you guys may want to find a new forum becuase your not allowing people to speak freely..Why even have a forum then? All the info we need has been asked once at least in the forum, we could just search the forum to find answers or the web.  You all are not interested in what this forum is all about.. Just saying, the spirit of the forum anyway

But say they left behind a box or two of ammo..Does that seem like a plausible scenario?Say you they take it all except your kids BB gun and a box of BB's? Would that seem likely to happen if you were bulgurized or easy to miss by someone in a hurry to steal from you? Now All you have left is the BB gun and maybe 50 rds of some caliber you own and gun for it. Nevermind, it could never happen, right? Or the SHTF would not go down like this in your "scenario" (Opps we mean fantasy).

I fiugured you would "lose me" I understand you dont do well doing two things at once Simply put, in essence your double speaking.. You said you got to go getting gasoline, Goes hand and hand,with your "type" getting frustrated easily, so go blow off your steam and come back.. BTW you need to take your own advice about "no whinning". Its a quality thats not something you need to display when things are not the way you think they should go.

I do think the original post (question) was a somewhat silly question and the clarification was really needed... The O.P.'s whining really gets under my skin!!! He says that the discussion would be about survival and states that college students can not have a firearm on campus. He then states that you already have a centerfire with 100 rds???? So if you can have a pistol, then why not a rifle? This argument just does not make sense to me!!! To answer the question, I would go with the Centerfire... I think 500 pellets would not last 10 years and I have rarely been able to reuse pellets.. If you go with the least number of leap years (2), you are looking at 3652 days.(3652 divided by 500 would equal one pellet for every 7.3 days!!!) My thoughts- Stupid Question!!!! Why just the 500 pellets? Why not 5000 or 50,000? Better question Pellet Rifle vs. Slingshot... I would rather have a slingshot!!!! Just my .02... Amos1909 |

I haven't had less than 100 rounds for any firearm I own or owned since I was 16 years old. Maybe the OP should ask if you would rather have an expensive rifle and scope with 50 rounds, or have a mosin with 500 rounds of mil surp ammo. I would take the mosin. An air rifle is reasonably capable of taking small game, but its not nearly as positive as a .22lr. If I was only allowed to have a pellet rifle, I would buy a good springer like a RWS 54. The OP should not get cranky when respected members of this "TECHNICAL" forum do not appreciate the brilliance of his post. This is a very respectful forum. Save the crankiness for general discussion. |

Maybe I don't understand the question either, but I think the correct answer to the OP's question is diversification-so he isn't forced into making such limited choices. Having options in an emergency is the whole point of this forum-at least in my way of thinking.
If my home, camp, and vehicles all burned I'd still have more weapons, ammo, and supplies than I could use in two lifetimes. |

Pellet guns ARE considered fire arms in some places like Great Britain.
A mid powered springer such as an RWS 54 certainly is capable of bringing down small game. It is about shot placement, not shear power because high powered springers can be difficult to shoot accurately. Given your parameters I would choose a Quackenbush Air Gun or something similar. |

Maybe I don't understand the question either, but I think the correct answer to the OP's question is diversification-so he isn't forced into making such limited choices. Having options in an emergency is the whole point of this forum-at least in my way of thinking. If my home, camp, and vehicles all burned I'd still have more weapons, ammo, and supplies than I could use in two lifetimes. Thats my problem if my home was burglarized or set ablaze I would lose everything besides My and my wifes ccw and 2 boxes of 50rds each between the both of us.. thats why you have a little thing called a fireproof gun safe. another option is to store a couple of weapons and ammo at a family members house or a trusted friends house. i have several "items" stored at my moms just in case something happens at my place. |

I'd have to say center fire in a caliber that can reach out a ways, like 30.06 or 308. I've got the skill and know how to make a longbow and arrows with hatchet or machete. And I'm good out to 20 yds. with the ability to kill big game (deer) silently. What do mean you don't have a couple of seasoned billets for bow making just laying around? Then use a hickory or white oak board with the right grain and make a board bow. Oh, and the strands out of 550 paracord can be twisted up for a string. Haven't heard of any legal restrictions on firewood or lumber. ;)

| In my part of the country, small game (that you would use a BB gun on), would be better to trap/snare. A BIG centerfire like .45-70 for BIG game or dangerous critters would make way more sense. Over a span of 10 years, I'd expect that I could figure out how to make useable BP & primers also. |

goodolboy, maybe you should read the sig line and then meditate on it. You can start a thread but folks are gonna respond with what they think about what they understood in your post, and frankly prosus was easier to follow in 2004 than your logic in this thread. |

yes, the OP's question was a little ill conceived. but the responses for the most part are short sighted at best, especially from ppl that call themselves "survivalists" you really think that there is NO chance that something will happen that will separate you from your preps when the need arises? How can you call yourself a survivalists if you cant even see the POSIBILITY of not having access to your full armory when SHTF? see, there's this little asshole out there named Murphy, and he will take your best laid preps and completely F them over. you can have a bunker full of beans bullets and bandaids to last 10 ppl 50 years, but if you cant mentally handle a run in with Murphy, then you should just quit now. "you have to pick between one of these two guns and this much ammo" "that's stupid, I have more guns and ammo then that!" "ok, what if you dont?" "then I buy more guns and ammo!" "OK, what if your house burns down with your stuff in it" "NA UH, cuz i'd put em in a fire proof safe!" (BTW, if you find a fire proof safe, ask them if they carry bullet proof vests, all i can find are the bullet resistant ones) the teotwawki situation is pretty much up to our imaginations at this point. could be massive economic collapse resulting in anarchy, could be nuclear war, famine, drought, plague, 2012 pole shift, solar flare/CME, or even alien tripods popping up out of the ground to use us as fertilizer. We DONT know what will happen, or where we will be WHEN it happens. So we prepair as best as we can, but also grow our skill sets and expand out knowledge so we can survive should we be left with nothing but the cloths on our back (and hopfully our BOB) when that day comes. SO, if I were sitting at home when it all went to hell, and a tanker truck full of gas crashes through my house the cab falling through the floor into my man cave, crushing all my food preps and cutting me off from my gun safe. with only seconds before SOMETHING ignights the coming fireball, I snatch up my 19mo son in one arm and the single shot rifle that was on the table insted of the pellet gun in the other(I dont normaly use them, but as luck would have it they were out for a good cleaning this morning) I manage to get out of the house and part way down the block before everything gos up. luckly there is always SOME stray ammo in my truck, 2 full boxes under the back seat and some singles in the cup holder. no point in going back, because even the best fire resistant safe wouldnt out last the heat of all the fuel burning. |
